McCarthy Disappointed By Marriott's Lack of League Chances
Friday, 3rd Oct 2014 06:00

Manager Mick McCarthy admits he’s disappointed that striker Jack Marriott, who rejoined Vanarama Conference Premier side Woking for a third spell last week, is yet to be given a run of games in the Football League.

Marriott, who scored 13 goals in 23 starts and one sub appearance during two spells at the Kingfield Stadium last season, netted on his third debut for the Cards as they lost 3-2 at home to Kidderminster last Saturday and also started the 1-0 victory over Nuneaton in midweek.

The 20-year-old had a brief spell at League One Gillingham last season in which he made one fleeting sub appearance and shortly before rejoining Woking completed a month at League Two table-proppers Carlisle, where he failed to net in three starts and two sub appearances.

“It’s been a bit stop-start for Jack,” McCarthy admitted. “He was flying at Woking last season, he loved it, they love him.

“He came back to us and we were trying to get him in the league. Gillingham took him but in the position they were in it didn’t work out.

“And I guess it was similar with Carlisle, one manager took him and left, so he’s come back and he’s gone back to Woking, not quite his spiritual home as such, but it feels like that because he’s done so well there.”

The Town boss is disappointed that the academy product, who has made one Capital One Cup start and two Championship sub appearances for the Blues, is still to get significant Football League experience under his belt.

“A little bit, but he has to get in the team,” he said. “I’m a realist, I don’t sit here whinging that a manager has left.

“If he goes to that club and he rips it up and he’s the best player, they’ll play him, no doubt.

“So, that’s what he’s got to do. He did it at Woking, has he done it at a league club yet? We can all bemoan what might have happened, he’s got to go and get in the team.”

Woking, who are fifth in the Vanarama Conference, are in action at Southport on Saturday afternoon.

At 20 he should really have broken through. Rather worried that Jack isn't going to make it with us, but he's very welcome to prove me wrong.

Well, let's he's 'only' 20, some guys' balls don't drop (into the back of the net of course!) until a couple of years after that. And the best way to get some Football League time? If he does well enough at Woking and bangs a few in, they could get promoted and voilà, "spiritual home" in the Big Time league!

I very much doubt DMcG or Murph would have scored at Gillingham or Carlisle because strikers can only finish the chances they're given. Okay so may DMcG would have created more, but Marriotts style is a quick finisher, not a deep lying creator. I hope he does well at Woking then it would be nice if a top or even mid table League 1 or 2 side who actually create chances, took him on loan so he can prove he can play and finish. He looked good all through pre-season but just looked a bit nervy when it finished and hopefully TC can put an arm around his shoulder and sort that out (not really MMs style to do that but that's why they work so well as a team!)

A direct comparison with Bajner would be interesting at this time. Surely Jack would offer more than the big man is right now?

I am mystified as to this. MM says he is disappointed JM is not getting League games under his belt. But his answer to that is sending him to a non-league club.... How will this help? Unless, of course, no league clubs would take him??

Think your last point is probably right BlueMachines-no league club wanting to take him and play him.I am sure that if a league club wanted him with the intention of playing him that is what would have happened.

Send him to Rotherham. They play all the old Ipswich boys every week!!!!

He's obviously not doing the good stuff training with Woking 'Simple'..... Maybe we should be looking at the forward there keeping him from starting!!!

Not sure he is ready for the first team. Hasn't excelled at league clubs on loan, who haven't even rated him enough to start regularly. However, Bajner looks equally out of his depth. Marriott no worse.
