Chambers Dismisses Huddersfield Link and in New Deal Talks
Thursday, 16th Oct 2014 16:22

Town skipper Luke Chambers has dismissed reports linking him with a move to Championship rivals Huddersfield and confirmed: “I’m not going anywhere.”

Chambers was linked with the Terriers earlier this week, a national newspaper claiming they wanted to sign him on loan initially with a view to completing a permanent deal in the January transfer window.

The 29-year-old former Nottingham Forest captain, whose contract is due to expire at the end of the season, said: “I heard about that but I’m not going anywhere. We’re talking, the club and I, so hopefully something will be agreed. I don’t want to go anywhere.

“This is my most enjoyable spell as a professional. My family are settled down here, I love all the boys here, the gaffer has been brilliant with me since day one and the fans have been fantastic as well. There’s also the prospect of Premier League football but for me it’s all about playing for the gaffer.

“Every team he has been involved with, he’s had them right at the top end of the league and that’s where we want to be. When you play under him you’ve always got a chance. Where I want to play is the Premier League and because I’m getting on a bit now I think my opportunity will be with Ipswich.”

That will be music to the ears of all Town fans, especially with Chambers pivotal to the club’s current unbeaten run of seven games that has coincided with him moving from right-back to his preferred role in the centre of defence.

Chambers added: “I’ve never made any secret of the fact that I wanted to play there and it’s just unfortunate for Tommy [Smith] that he has dropped out. But he has been fantastic, right behind everyone in the team.

“It shows the strength in depth we have and the togetherness too. Smudger obviously wants to play and will be doing everything he can to get back in the team, which is keeping us on our toes on this unbeaten run.

“We’re a completely different team now in my opinion. I did my best at right-back and tried to offer what I could.

"It was a long season for me playing there but I feel so much more comfortable in the middle and, as the gaffer has mentioned, having a right-footed and left-footed player there has given us more balance to attack down both sides.

"Jonny [Parr] scored at the back post the other week and we’re looking like we can attack both sides and be a bit more diverse.”

Meanwhile, Saturday’s opponents Blackburn have injury concerns regarding centre-half Grant Hanley and striker Josh King, who picked up knocks while on international duty.

Striker Rudy Gestede is back in training after a hamstring problem, as are midfielder Tom Cairney (groin) and Alex Baptiste (calf), while one-time England international midfielder David Dunn will come back into the squad after a knee injury.

Rovers will definitely be without Tommy Spurr (groin), Chris Brown (knee) and Jason Lowe (foot), while the game is likely to come too soon for Paul Robinson (knee).

I was concerned that Chambers was allow to enter the last year of his contract, but his words have given me comfort that he will be signing for us. He is an absolute key member of our squad as well as our inspirational Captain, so I await news of a new contract with anticipation. COYB.

Great news, but it didnt come as a surprise did it?
Personally I never really took any interest in the rumours claiming Chambers to be a potential target for Huddersfield. Huddersfield are a small club in "no-mans-land" (I've been there) without any decent excitement and he's currently at a club where something good is really about to happen.
He's our captain and a regular in an eleven genuinely fighting for promotion!

BUT, it's delightful to hear him say that he doesnt want to leave Town. Hopefully many more fist pumps to come... :)
Back in the UK next week for Cardiff away, hopefully see you all there!

Captain fantastic! Solid centre back and despite doing a decent job at full back there has notably been a difference in the performances of late. Love his relationship with the fans. He truly understands how important it is and its great for us. Look forward to seeing the chambo fist pump for many seasons to come!

Great news, pleased he wants to stay, well worth a new contract, a vital part of our promotion push. To be fair, assuming he hadn't wanted to stay, I'd of thought he'd be attracting interest from a club more note worthy than Huddesfield????

Great news that Chambo looking to extend his contract.Once he has signed almost all of the important members of the squad will be contracted to 2016 at least. This is further proof of the belief in and around the club that good things are happening and will continue to happen. Also proof that they like playing for MM.

I recall spending hours on my PC wondering will he or won't he sign back in the days when there was much transfer speculation and nothing happened. Thank goodness you signed Chambo I've loved you from the start and hope you will be with us for the long haul. Now a true blue.

Chambers has looked solid at centre half. Better there than right back. It's a shame for Smith though.

Why on earth would anyone want to move from Ipswich Town to Huddersfield? Oh, hang on a minute ....

It was quite clear that he didn't enjoy playing at full back but he stuck at it for the good of the team. Top bloke, signing Parr and moving him into the middle was a master stroke and now the whole defence looks really solid.

Brilliant news, played well at right back and improved in that area, but is clearly more comfortable at centre back. Has built a great rapport with the fans and his fist pump celebration is fun, but also so passionate. You can see he loves playing for the club and has pride in the shirt. Top bloke and great pro

Great news. McGoldrick, Williams, Berra, Mings and recently Murphy have all had a lot of public praise, and quite rightly so, but for me Chambers is every bit as important.
Great player and great skipper. Hurry up and sign.

This is one of the most ridiculous rumours I've ever heard. Why on earth would a club just randomly let their captain, who starts every game, go out on loan to a lower team? Like, who came up with this?

Hope he stays and keeps playing the way he is. Berra and himself could bring us promotion, so glad the club seem to be trying to sort his future out. The link to Huddersfield is laughable though.
