McCarthy Praises Evans For His Patience
Wednesday, 19th Nov 2014 14:07

Boss Mick McCarthy has praised owner Marcus Evans for showing patience with his managers since taking charge of the club.

Jim Magilton was the man in the hot seat when Evans took over in December 2007 but the former skipper failed to take the Blues into the play-offs and was dismissed in April 2009.

His successors Roy Keane (20 months) and Paul Jewell (21 months) were similarly unable to bring the good times back to the club but Evans never seemed in any hurry to wield the axe.

McCarthy celebrated two years as Town’s boss at the start of the month and has now taken charge of 101 games.

"“I think Marcus Evans has been patient with everybody,” he said. “With Paul Jewell, I think it was Paul that wanted to leave. Marcus tried to talk him out of if and he did for a while, it was quite evident.

“Fair play to Paul and thanks to him, he said ‘No, you should go and get Mick McCarthy to do it’ and that was all amicable, it wasn’t that he wanted him to leave.

“I think he’s got a history of giving people time. But you need results because if you don’t get results fans turn on you and the owner’s got to be a very tough cookie not to sack you.

“We’ve had good results and that gives you time and then you get to your 100 games or more and you can progress.

“Quite clearly you don’t progress if you’re out after 30 games and somebody else comes in and they get 30 games, then somebody else comes in.

“Unless you’re at Watford and you’re top of the league, they can have as many managers as they want! But it doesn’t happen normally.”

Aside from the immediate natural reaction to victories or defeats, McCarthy says he tries to remain on an even keel regardless of results.

Reflecting on the reaction of some supporters to Huddersfield coming from two goals behind to draw 2-2 at Portman Road a month ago, he added: “We got booed off, ‘Rubbish, McCarthy! You’re rubbish’ and all that.

“That doesn’t bother me, but when I’ve had a bad day, like everybody else, I don’t like somebody saying ‘You’ve had a bad day and you’re rubbish’. That doesn’t help.

“I remember all those things and that’s why when I’ve won three on the bounce and we’ve got nine points and they’re all singing ‘super Mick’, I’m still on that same level that I was when I came off when they were shouting ‘You’re rubbish’ and they were booing me.

“There might be a little hint of a smile when we’ve won three in a row and when we’ve had a little dip I might have a growl, but I come in here on a Monday morning and I’m the same, consistent person.”

Keane was the wrong manager at the wrong time.
Jewell was the right manager at the wrong time.
McCarthy is the right manager at the right time.

Third time lucky!

Anyone else left slightly ashamed after reading those last few paragraphs, regardless of whether you were a part of it or you were 'just booing the ref'?

Let it never happen again; onwards and upwards (sidewards wouldn't be so bad either)!

“Unless you're at Watford and you're top of the league, they can have as many managers as they want!” - classic Mick :)

Agreed Upbeat.. not nice to read! Very very frustrating indeed.. These fans who boo simply don't have a clue. I couldn't think of one other manager whos got a proven track record in the Championship who I'd want to replace MC. We would certainly be a lot worse of if he wasn't at the helm !!

It never ceases to amaze me how many other clubs press the self-destruct button, either through greed, ignorance or panic when dismissing managers. Our patience has always been a strength, and we have never lost this as the game has evolved and become more pressurised.

It is critically important that we show patience and support for Mick come the day that we hit a tough patch (e.g. with a run of injuries) as we will struggle to get another manager like him. My sense with Mick is that he is very loyal to those who do right by him, and I would be very happy to see him at Portman Road for a long time.

Fair comment from Mick , but why on earth did M Evans pick Keane and Jewell in the first place ?
Keane's volatile nature was well known even then , really not the right man to have a long term club plan or mentor young players ( more like give them away ! ) I cant blame ME for refusing now to spend big money on players after RK s awful purchases , so still we suffer from that .
Jewel's previous job at Derby was a disaster , and a quick look online would have revealed personal indiscretions which would make any employer think twice .
Apparently it was Harry Redknapp who recommended PJ !

Re Harry - agreed. To be honest, I worry when I see some folks commenting on the lines of 'let Mick get us into the Prem and then we need someone else'. I cannot get along with that attitude. If Mick gets us into the Premier League, particularly with the resources at his disposal, it will be an immense achievement and one that will deserve a considerable show of patience and respect on our part as we step into the challenge of top flight football. Not calling for his head after six months because 'he's got a rubbish Prem record' or 'he plays the wrong style'.

You'll always get a few shout rubbish during a blip, he must know that the majority of us are always behind him, and yes sometimes it is frustrating especially when you concede in the last minute - we've been through that a lot in the last few seasons..

It seems at last that the feel good factor is with us right now...

Yes indeed "Super super Mick ....."

But I think us Town fans should actually start to sing the praises of Marcus Evans. I font mind if hecwants hisnorivacy. Frankly this man has kept ITFC a going concern and I thank him sincerely for that.

So I wonder what he would feel likr if the SBR lower belted out

...There's only one Marcus Evans....
one marcus evans...
Walking along. Singing a song
walking in an Evans wonderland.

We owe him a lot imo.

Said it before but Kean got picked on the back of taking Sunderland from the bottom of the table to promotion in about 6months after Nial Quin almost ruined them. He had a huge rep as a player and that meant in theory plauers should want to come and play for Roy Keane, he also should have had the conections to pluk the best young talent around either perm or on loan. I agree though that he was never the rigt man and felt as much the day it was announced

Jewell was appointed because he had a rep as being a good fit for smaller clubs having taken Wigan from L2 to yhe prem and somehow also got Bradford up there. Jewll inherrited that Derby team from Billy Davis who failed (be it his fault or due to lack of funds) to strenghten it the summer they went up, they never stood a chance and the feeling amongst county fans that I knew at the time was that they never expexcted to stay up and the board figured take the cash and the parachute payments by xmas they were so far gone no one really wanted to go there, no one capable of dragging them up the table anyway, the fololowing season was also a disaster but as much as a result of a premm hangover, something which we see more and more these days

ArnieM totally agree, have had the same thought myself, and song choice works... "One Marcus Evans". Also why is Mick getting so upset by a few idiots that sit behind him, probably the same idiots that Keane wanted moved away (Mick might not mind so much knowing that they upset Keane) it does annoy that it seems we are all being tarred with the same brush. Come on Mick most of us do our best to get behind You, Terry and the Boys. COYB

I've never booed my team! Never have, never will, and believe me, I've seen some rubbish over the years, but what does booing achieve?? Does it motivate the team? I think not!!
It doesn't have the same effect as when everyone boos Nugent, and he always scores!! (Still don't know why we do that either! Cos they always have the last laugh!)
Stick with Mick, through thick and thin, there will be more good times than bad, and there's a lot worse out there, so, always be thankful for what we have!
