Stewart Hopes He Has Town Future
Monday, 23rd Mar 2015 22:40

Winger Cameron Stewart, who moved to League One Barnsley on loan on Saturday, hopes he still has a future with the Blues, despite having made just two FA Cup sub appearances since joining Town following his release by Hull City last summer.

“I’d like to think so,” the 23-year-old told BBC Radio Sheffield. “Until somebody tells me no, I’ll try and chase that but I think you’ve got to be realistic sometimes and when things don’t go as well as they [might], sometimes you’ve got to be prepared to move on.

“Until someone turns round to me and says ‘Look Cameron, we want you out’ or what not, then I will fight for my place there. But I’m open to options.”

Stewart’s move to Barnsley came about very quickly, the former Manchester United trainee having travelled with the Blues squad to Watford before linking up with the Tykes and making his debut and playing the first 73 minutes of their 1-1 draw with Preston at Oakwell.

He added: “It’s been a long season, I’ve not played many games whatsoever, other than a little bit in the FA Cup.

“It’s a good loan move for me to come and get some games and enjoy myself a little bit.”

Stewart, who signed a three-year deal with the Blues, believes various factors have limited his opportunities at Portman Road: “Maybe a bit of stiff competition, maybe whether the manager fancied putting me in or not. I’m not sure.

“I was injured at the start of the season and that set me back, so things like that have all played a part.

“In the end it was time for me to play games, I couldn’t really sit out a full year of doing nothing, I think that would be poor on my behalf and the easy way out.”

His primary target is to help Barnsley into the League One play-offs, they’re currently seventh, but on a personal level he’s also out to impress not just his Town manager but everyone else.

“My secondary aim is to more than show Mick McCarthy, show everybody that I’m out here and I want to play football,” the Manchester-born player continued.

“I’m not going to just sit there at Ipswich and do nothing, I want to be playing football, I want to be doing things and whether that’s at Ipswich or somewhere else next season, who knows.”

Hope it works out. Think it's a travesty he's had to wait nearly a whole season to get out on loan , 6 months without football . Mm get it right sometimes but In this instance bad mAnagement.

If Cam gets Barnsley promoted, I think we can be pretty sure that MM will notice and be impressed!

I want this to work The idea of having a young quick winger is exciting and it's a shame that for whatever reason it's not happened this season MM must have seen something in the lad to have offered him 3 years hopefully it will show itself again

Well you were given a 3 year contract so MM saw something in you, it's now up to you to prove you are better than the players in the team and you have not done that in training or you would have had the same chance as Bru and Bishop and Mings and Clarke

Take responsibility yourself and stop blaming the manager, wonder why Hull and Leeds did not want you

I hope it works out, as for the U21 games that I have watched CS has not been a stand out player. I think that Connelly has more in his locker and is far closer to a first team call up.

he was wanted by other clubs too so he must have something about him

I believe leeds deal fell through because of all the political wrangling at the club back then

Amazing really. Whenever he played against us he caused no end of problems for as MM would say our fantastic defenders. He scored against us ,he created chances against us ,he won penalties against us. He offers something that no other team member in our first 11 offers ,yet MM clearly does not like the fact he is an out and out forward player with little defensive discipline. Crying shame as an in form confident Stewart would get us off our seats ,excite and put a bit of fear into the opposition defenders. MM has done so well though its hard to knock his decisions ,but i for one would love to see Stewart play in our side. A winger with pace and goals in him......

I hope he goes to Barnsley and does enough to show Mick he's worthy of a chance. I thought his lack of game time might be because of a bad attitude, but reading the comments he seems to be a decent lad who wants to earn his place. Hopefully there's still plenty of time for him to do well for us.

I can't understand why anyone would think that MM is a bad manager purely because he hasn't played Cameron Stewart. Perhaps he is simply not good enough?

His U21 performances have been very ordinary and to be truthful I haven't seen anything that would make me think that he has any God given right to be in the first team.

Have a look at the Barnsley forum and you will see that they thought he was "poor" in his first match for them.

He might well be talented and have a great future but, for whatever reason, he is not ready at this moment in time.

We might well need a winger with pace but it might not be Cameron Stewart.

Big shame. Was excited when he signed as thought he could be dangerous. Really hoped hed come into the team for the run in to give us a bit more attacking threat from midfield. It does look like micks made his mind up on him, in mick we trust!

I feel that he has a right to be a bit miffed, and a cameo as Anderson had on Saturday would not have gone amiss;but he is still our player and not sure that Mick has written him off as still has two years of contract to run and age is on his side.
Feel Mick should get something for him should it be decided he can move on.

Mick sees him every day so is best placed to make a call BUT pace is something we currently lack on the wing. Just hope we sign a couple of players as have injuries and small squad. Would hate to miss out on play off place because we don't have adequate cover in all positions.

I've seen him three times for the U21s and his feet are quicker than his brain and he drifts out of games & runs himself into blind alleys. Mick bases his team around a huge work ethic & this lad shows little inclination to do the running & harrying. An unnecessary luxury in our current system, only likely to produce once in every six or so games. Much like JET, League 1 is his level. The only thing in his favour is 4 goals in 90 odd games, a return that comfortably matches the strike rate of our current midfield.. .
