Varney to Undergo Rehab at Town
Thursday, 25th Jun 2015 12:14

Former loanee Luke Varney has confirmed that he will undergo the rehab from his achilles injury with the Blues and says he is keen to get back to action with Town as soon as possible.

Varney, who made seven starts and five sub appearances for the Blues after joining on loan from Blackburn in February, scoring once, suffered a ruptured achilles in the first leg of the play-off semi-final with Norwich City, which subsequently required surgery and is expected to sideline him for around six months.

Speaking in May, manager Mick McCarthy said Town had offered the 32-year-old use of the club’s facilities while he recovered from the injury.

Once assessed fit, he will be offered terms with his Blackburn contract up at the end of the month.

“I’ve already spoken to Marcus, we’ve agreed to look after him and he can come and stay down here and we’ll make sure he’s fit,” he said soon after the striker or wideman had suffered the injury.

“He’s got all our facilities and the medical care and attention we’d give to any one of our players. He won’t be our player but we’ve got to take care of him.

“We’ve already agreed that so hopefully he’ll take that offer up and then, when he is fit, we can discuss doing something with him, if that’s what he wants to do.

"Primarily it’s a thank-you to him for what he’s done and what he’s brought since he’s been here.”

Confirming that he has taken up Town's offer of medical care and use of their facilities, Varney told the official site: “The club have been great with me and I’m already working on my rehab, getting some treatment. I just want to get back and play for Ipswich again as soon as possible now.

"I'm in good hands and I just want to pull that Ipswich shirt on again and repay all the players, staff and fans for their support."

After a spell in non-league with Quorn, Varney started his professional career with Crewe and subsequently had spells with Charlton, Derby, Sheffield Wednesday, Blackpool, Portsmouth and Leeds before joining Rovers last summer following a loan at the end of the previous season.

With the game time he had he improved each game and certainly gave us that little extra. Lets hope he gets back to fitness quick and we give him a contract.

Heartening story in this commercially expedient era. Well done Ipswich Town FC.

This is great news, he was really impressive for us last season.

Though who else saw 'rehab' and had nasty flashbacks to Chopra?

This isn't news then. It's just a rehash of what was said at the end of the season.

No Mr Bloo... It's a follow on from that... in that he is confirming that he has taken up Town's offer of medical care and use of their facilities, and is working on his rehab and getting some treatment.

The story at the end of the season was that it had been offered.

Good news and I wish him a speedy recovery, but clearly he won't be featuring for us any time soon. Hoping for some positive news on us actually signing some players to replace the considerable number of first team players who have been released or returned to thei parent clubs since the play off defeat. Pre season training starts next week and we are massively weaker in terms of numbers in comparison to the end of last season. Appreciate many don't seem to care, but I remain disappointed.

Great news and a good player. Hopefully he can get back to how he was before he was injured.

Fantastic of the club to do this for him as, with his contract up at Blackburn, I assume he would need to recover under his own steam.

Get well quickly Reg. Can't wait to see you in a Town shirt again.

Apparently ITFC have also lent him 75 Euros to pay off a couple of 'gents' who appeared at the medical centre demanding cash.....

Great news, well done all round. ITFC is gradually returning to being more like the Club I fell in love with in the 70s in its approach to things. Get well soon Luke, we're all right behind you!

Very commendable by the club to look after Varney , well done to all but he will not be playing for a while and I must be missing something as due to him being injured he has suddenly become a good player for this league ? Personally didn't think he offered us that much a apart from work ethic and need better quality players to challenge for promotion

@jas0999 - Agreed. Thinking we can probably start the first couple of league games with seven players though, right?

I wouldn't say that i am, or indeed that we need to be, concerned with the lack of new signings so far. Granted we have lost a fair few since our play-off exit but we should now by now that Mick's transfer dealings are always kept under fairly heavy wraps, and we only tend to hear about it once a deal is done and signed. Often with Mick, 2 or 3 players tend to all come in at once. So there is still plenty of time for new ,and suitable, additions to the squad. That said, I would also like to see some new faces sooner rather than later. Firstly so the new players have time to embed in to the team ready for the kick off at Brentford, and secondly as an idea of our intent this season. A few good quality signings would show we mean business this season. So, would be great to see new players come in asap, but at this moment we should not be too worried that we haven't seen any.

in the same way as I accept that Ipswich wear blue, I think i'm finally starting to accept that we have a large contingent of 'support' who love to moan about things.

Yay! It's great to be an ITFC fan!

If we're not going to play out and out wingers then I personally thought he offered a lot on the right - making a 442 into a 433 very quickly. But he's still 6 months away from fitness so best not hold our breaths for that return in Ipswich blue.

But with Ryan Fraser apparently joining on loan you have to believe that Mick will actually be playing him or he's a total waste of money. Where does this leave the pacy wingers we already have ... clearly they are young so the development squad will benefit, but when will they be old enough to be good enough (if that is the Phrase?)

Of all the players we took on loan last season he was the only one who you could see any class in. In each game or part of he played you could see an improvement. Apart from decent pace he has strength on the ball and Aries ability as well. If you noticed when Varney was playing the ball was not booted up field to Murphy every time.

Make no mistake, town are doing this for their benefit as well as the players. If all goes well (and I hope it does) we get a decent player who will add to our playing staff for zero cost which is always good business.

I think i'm starting to agree with you. My "down votes" would also support this theory! Oh well, each to their own and thats part of the beauty of football.

Well done ITFC for doing the right thing and giving him the opportunity to get fully fit, I admire Luke for his whole hearted attitude and effort to the cause last season until cruelly cut short so refreshing after some of the take the money dross we have had on loan in the past few years, looking forward to seeing you on the park in 2016.
