McCarthy Hoping Stewart Rediscovers His Mojo at Doncaster
Wednesday, 2nd Sep 2015 06:00

Town boss Mick McCarthy hopes winger Cameron Stewart can rediscover his mojo during his half-season loan with League One Doncaster Rovers.

The 24-year-old joined the South Yorkshiremen last week and made his debut as a 68th minute sub as they defeated Fleetwood 2-0 at the Keepmoat Stadium on Saturday.

Last night he netted the final penalty in a 5-3 shoot-out victory at home to Burton Albion in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy following a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes.

Stewart, who ended last season on loan at Barnsley, has made only two sub appearances for the Blues, both in the FA Cup, since signing a three-year deal in the summer of 2014 after his release by Hull City.

Why does McCarthy think the move hasn’t worked out? “Good question, like everybody else they get plenty of work put into them, plenty of coaching, plenty of advice, assistance, nurturing. They get it all.

“Sometimes it just doesn’t happen to them, for whatever reason, and it hasn’t with Cameron.

“Let’s hope he goes to Doncaster and gets his mojo back and does what he did when we saw him playing for us against Charlton and Leeds, because he was a real handful. Good luck to him, I hope he does.”

The Town boss dismisses the suggestion that the former Manchester United trainee hasn’t shown the right attitude: “No, I’m not questioning that.

“He came in and he broke his jaw in pre-season [2014/15], got knocked back, then didn’t play and I know what can happen.

“If you get an injury early on and then you don’t get in the team and you’ve come in and you’re expecting to be playing, it can leave you that bit deflated. And he’s just never got it back.

"Mind you, he was on loan when we saw him. Maybe he plays well when he’s on loan.”

Meanwhile, Town’s final transfer window signing Tommy Oar has been given the number 15 shirt.

Elsewhere, former Blues loanee Richard Stearman, 28, joined Fulham from Wolves on deadline day for a fee understood to be worth up to £2 million with add-ons, signing a three-year deal with an option for a fourth season.

One-time Town skipper David Norris, 34, has left Yeovil after making just one appearance for the Glovers, as a sub in Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Oxford United, having signed non-contract terms less than a fortnight ago.

Prebbs - How huge a 'mistake' is it? U should have rung Mick and told him, of all players I think Mick knows Stearman better than most.

Phil re Stearman is it a 2 year deal with an option of a third or a 3 year deal with an option of a fourth?

It's only a mistake if you try to do something and fail. No evidence MM attempted to get Stearman this time. Alternatively ME spending £2m of his cash of Stearman might have ended up being a mistake instead - who is to say it would be worth it, when it seems far more prudent not to waste money on transfers but to invest in wages.

Stearman was outstanding while at PR. I think that is accepted by most. We have conceded a number of sloppy goals already this season (although GK errors can be blamed especially Saturday) and in my opinion Stearman is a better defender than anything we have apart from Berra !!! Fulham however do have parachute money and able to pay wages we probably couldn't match.
With all that understood still think we would be much stronger with him at RB/CB ahead of Chambers Smith Emmanuel Parr Yowerth or Mr Poland.

Should that be, "...playing AGAINST us FOR Charlton and Leeds."? I don't think he's ever been a handful in a Town shirt!

Stearman and Bryne were 2 I would have liked to join the squad but then it's easier to see the grass being greener as a fan than being realistic like MM. We will be fine come the end of the season. What a lot of fans don't tend to accept os it does and will take some time for the team to fully gel and bed down; and considering we got 10 from 5 with a much changed squad and style it's certainly a case of the best is yet to come in my humble opinion.

Correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't Varney still have the no. 15 shirt? Did he get a different one?

Stearman is a weird one for Wolves to let go. Player of the year last season and signed a new contract.
To let go for £2m seems bizarre, especially as only 28.

Varney hasn't been assigned a squad number. Technically still a free agent.

This sounds like Mick hasn't completely closed the door on Stewart, there may be a future for him at Town after all?

Never made it on Saturday V Brighton so popped down to see my local club Donny. Cant judge him on the time he had on the pitch but if he cant make it in L1 then theres no hope for the lad.

Not a great start for him with the injury, whilst his mind seemed more focused on settling his claim against Leeds than playing football for us. One of those free transfer signings which simply hasn't worked out. Shame.

Doncaster will be handy for Stewart to pop round to Elland Road to ask Dirty Leeds to pay him what they owe.

Yes let's hope so he can be offloaded & off the wage bill...

As for Stearman he was quality down here but Zi wouldn't want to pay £2M for him, not after the quality bargains Mick has got in.

Then there's Norris, always liked him down here & had seen he had signed for Yeovil. Shame he can't get a better club.
