Town Recall Hyam From Rotherham
Tuesday, 22nd Dec 2015 11:34

Town have recalled midfielder Luke Hyam from his loan at Rotherham, the Millers have revealed.

The 24-year-old joined Rotherham towards the end of November in order to continue his comeback after almost 11 months out with a knee injury.

Town manager Mick McCarthy included a recall clause in the deal which allowed them to bring Hyam back to Portman Road at 24 hours' notice after the first 28 days of the loan, which was due to run to January 23rd.

The former Blues academy player made two starts and three sub appearances while at the New York City Stadium, netting an unfortunate own goal in the 1-0 defeat to Blackburn.

Rotherham boss Neil Redfearn told the Millers' official site: “Mick has injuries and it is coming into a time when he needs his players back.

“There is a recall clause available to Ipswich so we have to respect their option to bring Luke back.

“I would like to thank Mick McCarthy and Ipswich Town for allowing us to take Luke here. I would also like to thank Luke for his service to us, he did a great job for the club during the time he was here.

“I thought he was outstanding in the [2-0] victory over Hull City last Saturday and we wish him all the best for the future.”

Hyam's last Town game was the FA Cup replay at home to Southampton in January in which he suffered the knee injury which eventually required surgery in the summer.

He will go straight into the squad for Boxing Day's game against QPR at Portman Road.

Good to have you back Luke.

I feel for Rotherham tho. I'm glad AN-M and Ryan Fraser are with us for the whole season!

Perhaps Mick has seen one of own midfielders do well against one of the top clubs, and will now make room for him in our midfield, as well.

I am glad to see him back at Portman Road if only because you know he will give you 100% across the whole pitch for the entire match. The fastest Douglas moved vs Derby was when he was substituted and ran off the pitch.
I just hope supporters don't expect miracles from Hyam and the lad doesn't feel he needs to go mental to prove himself. We all know he is "one of our own" and he doesn't want to let anyone down.

He will add tenacity and bite to the midfield, but he won't solve the creativity issues we have in our squad, nor will he be likely to add to the goals for Column, it's not what he does. Think he would have done well against Derby at the weekend though and would have Def got amongst it.

Great move by MM as lots of games coming so good to have fresh legs. I've the feeling that he will get forward and be more positive. Douglas is tooo slow for me and while he has scored i feel that Bru/Hyam/Varney will bring more

Good to see him back, but Douglas, Skuse and Hyam are very similar players. None attack minded. Add Coke to that (note, I'm not comparing Coke to the other three as that would be very disrespectful to them!!) and it's important we sign some creativity in January, unless Bishop is due back which seems unlikely. Suspect though Hyam is cover for Skuse.

Yeah ass good t'see Lukey back in the squad. He's a loocal buoy, he knows what it means to pull on the shirt. And he'll bring a lot of energy to the midfield.

Be interesting to know where Redfearn played Hyam in their midfield, under Jewell further forward he was a better player. The game against West Ham when we trounced them he had an absolute stormer - need to get those days back but as a holding midfielder?

TimmyH it was Mick who tried moving him forwards. He played better as a holding midfielder under Jewell and also Keane, who gave him his debut against Boro away. Seem to remember he played really well on his debut. He's too limited a footballer to play further forward.

Its a good call by Mick McCarthy. The busy Christmas schedule is bound to bring on more injuries and now he is fit and raring to go then why not!

@jimmy86 - I remember him under PJ having more of a licence to roam rather than being set in the holding position - anyway for sure he's not the same player under Mick.

Hopefully to replace Douglas. He would make us a different proposition in midfield, I would play him alongside bru, but no chance of mm thinking that way.

Only thing with playing Hyam alongside Bru, is that Skuse can do the holding role, but is better on the ball than Hyam is. Plus when Dougie was allowed more license to get forward he started finding the back of the net.

Guess that's to replace Coke on the subs bench. It's unlikely MM will leave Douglas out of the starting 11. Good move by MM as Hyam is a completely different class to Coke. It strengthens our squad which has got to be good.

I think Douglas in a free role helps the forwards more.but that's my thoughts anyway. Glad hyam is back hopefully skuse and hyam will do the defence cover and Douglas and Bru does the free role. Happy Christmas everyone :-)

Personally I would rather see him in the team alongside Douglas as I think he offers more protection than Skuse does and certainly more energy and Douglas has a goal in him. Thought we faded badly and started conceding more when he was injured after Xmas last year

Personally if we were to play with three in the centre it will be Hyam, Bru and Bishop - obviously when all are fully fit. A mix of tacklers, flair and passing - but all have a good workrate.

I know that I am in the minority but I don't actually think that Skuse offers that much.

I think he's more cover for Coke/Skuse and Douglas over Christmas.

We know Bishop isn't likely to be around soon, so another injury to those above will leave us short in the middle.

I've always liked Hyam, reminds me a bit of David Batty, does the dirty work, will never ping a 60 yarder or an amazing through ball, but will get the ball and give it to someone who can.

Still feel Bishop is the missing link at the moment.

It will be great to see Luke back. We know he is Ipswich through and through.

A replacement for Bru, Douglas or Skuce as any one could get injured with all the games coming up. We also know Bru struggles with a full 90 minutes.

Mick will have a selection problem which is a great problem to have!

Surco & Mattin
Have to agree!
He played better without Skuse along side him (because he has more options in front of him!) & although he might put the odd pass astray at least he does look for a forward pass.
Again I'll be corrected if wrong but wasn't he in the team during our best spell (of football) last year & hasn't our football been dire since he's been injured?
I know Skuse played along side him in some of those games but I think our football is better with just the one of them so I hope we don't have to wait until he's 28+ & slows up before Hyam gets the nod.

Hopefully no more Coke on the subs bench!

........ let's hope he's learnt that sideways and backwards are not the only options when he has the ball.

Amazing how many have short memories ......... conveniently to when it suits.

....... but will he be allowed to even look towards the opponents goal ?? - if he plays.
