Winger Oar Departs at His Own Request
Friday, 22nd Jan 2016 15:46

Town have announced that they have “reluctantly” agreed to terminate winger Tommy Oar’s contract at his own request, the Australian international having failed to settle in England.

Oar, 24, joined the Blues in August, siging a two-year deal, having left Dutch Eredivisie side FC Utrecht at the end of last season.

He made four Town starts - one in the league - and five sub appearances, scoring his only goal in the FA Cup tie against Portsmouth at Portman Road.

“I’d like to thank Ipswich Town for their co-operation over ending my contract,” Oar told the club site.

“It’s a great club and the manager, staff and players made me feel very welcome but while I have enjoyed playing for Ipswich, I have found it difficult to settle into life in England.

“I have been away from home for five or six years now. My family came over at Christmas and maybe I’ve got to a point where I want to be closer to home again.

“It’s just one of those things where moving over here as not worked out as I had hoped but I’d like to wish the club, the manager, the staff and the players the best of luck over the rest of the season and I hope to be watching Ipswich in the Premier League next year.”

Boss Mick McCarthy added: “Tommy came to see me and said that he hadn’t settled in England and asked if it was possible to end his contract.

“It’s disappointing obviously as we had high hopes for him. He had shown great quality in training but I don’t want to keep a player at the club who doesn’t want to be here. We wish him well.”

McCarthy could look to add another winger to his squad as back-up to Ryan Fraser and Freddie Sears, although he already has the likes of Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Larsen Touré and Jay Tabb in his squad who play wide roles.

Meanwhile, former Blues loanee Jonny Williams has joined the MK Dons on a 93-day loan.

Not good. Wish Tommy all the best! But we have to replace him. We know that our so called "fringe players" are not good enough for the first team. We need someone to be pusshing a starting place!

But it will have to be free so of course we can forget that straight away. This will make way for MM to say toure can step up and make the cut which we all know he can't.

It's okay essex57 you can mark me down because you are an idiot. Everyone else few free to disagree with me about replacement and toure I'm totally fine with that.

My chant of "Oar Parr, Oar Parr - stick it up you jumper" doubly gone.

Rumour has it that after watching from the sidelines for 5 months he realised that a Mick McCarthy team doesn't really need wingers and he's decided to go and play Gaelic football with Shane Supple.

If he had come in and started like a house on fire the situation would be different. Nevertheless, you have to respect his decision and the reasoning behind it.

Gutted about this as thought he could have gone on to be a great player for us, but I wish him the very best of luck for the future

'Parr and Oar leave within a couple of weeks. Clearly evidence of an enormous exodus in protest at a manager who has obviously taken the club backwards...'

Seriously, folks, some of you are trying painfully hard to find a crisis at a stable club that is sitting 7th in the Championship with its best prospects of promotion in almost a decade.

Let's hope that it does not leave us up the creek without a paddle.

It certainly is a strange one. As Langdon Blue says, it's only a few days since he spoke of a seemingly straightforward transition for him; the interview was only published 4 days ago so presumably given within the last week.
Could he not have waited just another few months to see out the season, especially now that he is back fit? Had he just arrived over from Australia I could see homesickness being a problem, but surely moving to Holland, at a younger age, was an even greater trauma for him, but he stuck it out for years.
I can't help thinking that lack of first team football is the big issue here for him. He knows he is behind 2 players here on loan & a striker for a place on the wing.
Conspiracy theory is a deliberately extreme term to use towards those of us trying to get our heads around such a surprising development which has implications on our squad's chances of finishing in the top 6 come May.

Some work out, some don't that's the nature of the business. Can only hope MM will go find a replacement, sadly due to lateness of the window, if he does it would be another loanee.

I'm more disappointed that Jonny Williams has gone elsewhere, particularly given Bishop's ongoing problems

I don't mind being marked down - all about opinions & discussion on here imo - BUT come on only 1 person who marked me down actually commented themselves !!!!! Mark down by all means , but also give your opinion as well & remember we are all Town fans ...... despite what some on this board think (essex57!) even if we don't always agree 😀

Don't think we got to see the best of him. Real shame. Good luck for the future Tommy.

That's two bits of bad news out of Portman Road today. Bugger.

I wonder if Mick saying none of those who played at Portsmouth had a chance of getting into the first XI (outside injuries/suspension) had any affect? I wouldn't be surprised if that's true.

"Closer to home"??? That's as good as throwing your career away. What an odd decision. 24 years old. Australia of Europe? No brainer.

Right then Evans, show us what you've got...

Would like to see us enquire about McGeady. Been told he can leave Everton on loan, he's Irish, an out and out winger, could be a decent option

The validation of this will be where he plays next. Would have liked Johnny Williams back here.

Wishing Tommy all the best, clearly got lots of quality and will still have a good career! Sad to read this though as thought he would end up being an important player for us.

Would expect him to return home to Australia which is still a decent level. Good luck Tommy!

Disappointed with this news. Rather than release him couldn't we have tried to get a fee for him?

We only have short term cover for the wide areas given that Fraser and AMN will both return to their parent clubs at the end of the season. We need reinforcements.
