Winger Oar Departs at His Own Request
Friday, 22nd Jan 2016 15:46

Town have announced that they have “reluctantly” agreed to terminate winger Tommy Oar’s contract at his own request, the Australian international having failed to settle in England.

Oar, 24, joined the Blues in August, siging a two-year deal, having left Dutch Eredivisie side FC Utrecht at the end of last season.

He made four Town starts - one in the league - and five sub appearances, scoring his only goal in the FA Cup tie against Portsmouth at Portman Road.

“I’d like to thank Ipswich Town for their co-operation over ending my contract,” Oar told the club site.

“It’s a great club and the manager, staff and players made me feel very welcome but while I have enjoyed playing for Ipswich, I have found it difficult to settle into life in England.

“I have been away from home for five or six years now. My family came over at Christmas and maybe I’ve got to a point where I want to be closer to home again.

“It’s just one of those things where moving over here as not worked out as I had hoped but I’d like to wish the club, the manager, the staff and the players the best of luck over the rest of the season and I hope to be watching Ipswich in the Premier League next year.”

Boss Mick McCarthy added: “Tommy came to see me and said that he hadn’t settled in England and asked if it was possible to end his contract.

“It’s disappointing obviously as we had high hopes for him. He had shown great quality in training but I don’t want to keep a player at the club who doesn’t want to be here. We wish him well.”

McCarthy could look to add another winger to his squad as back-up to Ryan Fraser and Freddie Sears, although he already has the likes of Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Larsen Touré and Jay Tabb in his squad who play wide roles.

Meanwhile, former Blues loanee Jonny Williams has joined the MK Dons on a 93-day loan.

I agree totally with Phillo and Len Brennan. It doesn't have to be a conspirocy theory to wonder if one or two players aren't happy here. It happens in work the world over. If Oar and Parr were unhappy at Ipswich then so be it. They are hardly going to announce "I'm glad to be leaving this chicken s*** outfit and wish I'd never come. Oh and the manager smells of wee."

I don't understand why so many people on here lash out when they don't agree with a perfectly politely put view. Just use the down arrow and put your own view down in response. I don't always agree with my own views but I don't hit myself. Oh. Time for my jab I think........

Good riddance to yet more bad rubbish. More wages saved so I'm guessng we jumped at the chance to agree to his request.

Good luck to him. Does anyone bemoaning his lack of opportunities on the left wing think he should have displaced a certain Ryan Fraser?

That's a bit of a shock. To be honest I was hoping he'd really prove himself against Portsmouth, an international playing a League Two side, but it seemed he had little effect. With the FA Cup exit perhaps he wondered when his next chance would come.

With Fraser and Maitland-Niles being on loan, I am now worried we don't own a winger. Mick has tried to bring loads of youngsters in, but all end up being released.

Or could it be they realise that unless you are one of MMs chosen few no matter how well you perform you will not get a chance, there is more than one way of interpreting their decisions

Was never going to be able hold down a place in the first team whist Fraser and Sears are out wide. Perhaps a prospect for next season, but somehow I doubt this would have happened.

Looks like he became disillusioned away at Pompey this week. Realising that he is no more than a bit part player in the league, or its a case of U21 football or getting a stuffing in cup football.

I don't really blame him for leaving, he wanted more than Town could offer him. Good luck Tommy!

I would imagine like most Aussies I have encountered Oar is confident and straight to the point . Last week he publicly States he is happy and all is good at Town he plays in cup gets publicly told that none of the players are good enough to replace the first team and a few days later wants to leave?
I think that shows good ambition on his part and frees wages for the club to replace him . Hopefully MM has another Digby calibre replacement lined up ?

That is a real shame, i had high hopes for the lad, had some real quality and was starting to look the part, but if the lad wants out, good luck to him,

An Aussie who couldn't settle in the UK, but could in Holland........

I'm not getting picked, boo hoo. That must be that little Aussie battler spirit we always hear about.

Disappointing news following a disappointing result at Pompey. Not sure this is as straightforward as it seems but don't expect we'll ever know. What we do know is that we need a replacement quickly and that someone needs to be of Championship standard. As for the Parr and Williams calls well Parr was far too injury prone and Williams has not really ripped up any trees since he left us and is also a bit of a luxury if not fit, which seems to be a regular occurrence with him. Have to hope MM digs out a gem but will be difficult if the purse strings are tight.

It will be interesting to see where he ends up... Assuming his family lives in Australia then an Asian/Oceana team? If he ends up in England then his comments are BS. All the best though and a shame he didn't gt to shine with ITFC.

Not good enough in my opinion. Yet another cheap option who hasn't made the grade. Presumably we will sign a replacement, unless Evans wishes to save yet more wages and 'make do'. I suspect that's the case. Coke, Toure, Oar, the polish fella and Digby. Promotion? Time will tell.

Well guys read into this what you like but we are 2 squad players down. What I don't get is Parr and Oar should have had a role at this club now, and certainly for the future. Why did they both leave, better still why were they allowed to leave. Answer :- We have a first team that is nailed on, of which 2 are loanees. The Portsmouth game was a farce of the first order, and commented on by MM as such. And REPEAT there are no better players out there!!!! So who would you suggest we get in as a long term prospect at ITFC, bearing in mind they have to free, on low wages and be prepared to play in the reserves ad infinitum. Not sure where MM is going at present, if it's the play offs then I really hope we make it and the final and the Premiership, if we don't some serious, very serious questions need to be and will be asked about of the long term destination of our club. Somehow something is not quite right about all this.

Could it be likely itfc will still hold his registration until he signs for an Aussie club, preventing him joining another European side, otherwise he would have cancelled his contract under false reasons? Can't think they would want much of a fee in any case , being they signed him as a free agent in late August.
