Town Continuing Payne Pursuit
Wednesday, 18th May 2016 09:55

TWTD understands that Town are continuing to pursue their interest in Southend United midfielder Jack Payne.

A report yesterday claimed Huddersfield were the close to landing the highly-rated 21-year-old but we understand the Blues are also still very much in the hunt with manager Mick McCarthy keen to add goals to his midfield.

Wolves and Dutch side Sparta Rotterdam have also been linked with Payne, who will be out of contract at the end of the season and seems certain to leave Roots Hall having failed to agree new terms, while Bristol City and Millwall are also interested.

As Payne is under 24 years of age Southend would be due compensation from his new club, a figure either agreed between the sides or by a tribunal. According to the Southend Echo, Huddersfield and Sparta are the only ones to have contacted the Shrimpers so far, although sides can speak to the player without having sought permission from his current club.

In March, TWTD reported that Town boss McCarthy was spotted at Roots Hall watching the League One game between Southend and Crewe Alexandra in which Payne scored a last-minute penalty as the sides drew 1-1.

The 5ft 5in tall attacking midfielder was released by Tottenham as a schoolboy and subsequently joined the Shrimpers.

Having come through the Essex club’s youth system Payne, who can play centrally, wide or up front, broke into the senior side at the start of the 2013/14 season.

Since then the Londoner has gone on to make 52 starts and 35 sub appearances, scoring 17 goals, nine of them during 2015/16.

Meanwhile, Town keeper Bartosz Bialkowski played the second half of former Blue Kelvin Davis’s testimonial at his old club Southampton last night.

Bialkowski replaced Davis, 38, at half-time for a Saints Promotions XI, which also included former Town left-back Dan Harding and ex-Blues loanee Richard Chaplow, as they lost 5-4 to a current Southampton team.

Elsewhere, Blues midfielder or striker Monty Patterson is currently in action for New Zealand in a warm-up game ahead of the Oceania Nations Cup against Western Pride in Ipswich, Queensland. The 19-year-old netted a freekick in the ninth minute.

Good news. These are exactly the types of players we should be going for. If we don't get Jack then hopefully we will get someone similar.

He's been under McCarthy's “MICROSCOPE” for a while
And if he should happen to be a successful signing
would only command a “very small” fee :-)

Sorry he needs to be at least 32 and a free transfer, also needs to be a hoof football specialist he simply won't do. Oh I nearly forgot he must lack ambition of any kind

You cant win if you are MM with some fans... we are looking to sign a young attacking midfielder to help solve the lack of goals from midfield, so be happy.

Also I wonder how much influence Klug has on this? Wouldn't this kid have been in the Spurs academy he was working there?

Are we going to be overrun with mid-fielders?

We have Skuse, Douglas (unfortunately!), Bru, Hyam, Bishop and Dozzell plus four strikers in Sears, Murph, Pitman and Didzy. Plus any others coming through the academy.

I know a few have been told they are not needed like Tabb and Toure but they didn't play anyway.

The sort of player we should be bringing in - young but with plenty of games under his belt.

No doubt he'll go to whoever offers him the most cash.

Bluebell added 10:33 - May 18
I forgot to add we also have Giles Coke too (again unfortunately).

Lightningboy.... location might be a factor as well. I assume he lives in Essex and he's not a northern boy(Tower hamlets..so his folks probably live ex as well now). It might give us an edge over wolves, Huddersfield and Sparta

Bluebell- I think Coke might well be allowed to leave. He's an experienced championship midfielder so some of the bottom end or newly promoted sides might fancy him.

Payne could give good options in midfield and help give us a good midfield base for the next few seasons (Skuse/Hyam/Bish/McDonnell/Kenyu/Dozzell) that can develop together. If Payne can also play wide or I up front (I am assuming behind a main striker) than he would be a very valuable asset indeed.

Throw in Sears and Didz and we could have a very creative core to the team.
It is obvious where Mick is taking this team in terms of its development. Strong and pacy full backs (Kenlock/Knudsen/Josh), creative midfield and some pace and ability up front (Sears/Didz/Pitman).

Lets support what Mick is doing! BUT to develop this team and squad to compete will take time and patience :)

Bluebell, are you suggesting because of the numbers of midfielders we have, we don't need to go for players of this ilk? I would think if we could get some quality in, it would allow us to perhaps suggest to the likes of Coke or Douglas that they could maybe find themselves another club? (could be wishful thinking in some respects, admittedly)

George MONCUR or Alex GILBEY too please

This summer we need to go for quality rather than quantity, so this is EXACTLY the right sort of signing. Yes we have a lot of central midfielders already, but they are either youngsters who will be introduced gradually or non-creative players, so yes please to Payne!

Personally, I don't know much about him but I've only heard good, positive reviews. I'm glad we're going for these sort of players who are in the lower divisions and are hungry to play at a higher level.

Walsall and Peterborough have a few good players who we could also go have a look at too!

We will miss out on him because we don't act quick enough when this of player becomes available, I hope I'm wrong but I doubt it.

Paulcooperisgod - is Moncur really any good? Seemed to struggle last season a bit (although he was in an awful side)

kingcarloss- how do you knew act too late? can you provide evidence for this claim. I'm assuming you live in one of the drawers in MM's desk?

Also, all this moaning about us only signing old players.... There was a time under Big Fat Joe that Westlake was the only player in the side under 28. Naylor was 28 and the rest were 30 or over. This isn't an old team. Most of MM's signings have been under 30 by a long way. Seems if you pump out a lie often enough people believe it....its why theres still so many people believe in god/s I guess.

I just hope we manage to sign Jack.He is a quality player and has great potential.Coming from Southend I have seen him play this season and the reports I get from my friends says he is one to sign.He doe's live in the Southend area so moving,I would have thought might not be a problem,BUT having said that I imagine it's all down to his agent as to where he ends up.

Everyone is a little misinformed on here regarding Payne's position (I regularly watch Southend).Whilst he can play in midfield - he usually plays up front or just off the main striker (unsurprisingly someone over 6ft!). He is quick, two footed, attack minded and possesses a good shot on him (think of him a a poor man's Messi) Would be a great signing.

Haven't seen the boy play but his stats are impressive and exactly the type of player we all want to see us sign. Surely we're more tempting than Huddersfield!

Vodka boy,yes I agree with you, would be a very good signing. What do you think his best position is.? I liken him a bit like John Warks style of play.!!
