Town 0-1 Huddersfield - Match Report
Saturday, 1st Oct 2016 17:02

Championship leaders Huddersfield recorded their first win at Portman Road for 20 years as Christopher Schindler’s second-half header saw the Terriers to a 1-0 victory. The Blues, beaten at home for the first time in the league this season and now without a goal in four matches, never looked like getting back into the game after the German centre-half had put the visitors in front from a 58th minute corner.

Boss Mick McCarthy named the same XI which drew 0-0 with Brighton on Tuesday, while Luke Varney returned to the bench with Andre Dozzell the man to drop out of the 18.

Huddersfield were the first side to threaten, Sean Scannell winning an early corner down the Terriers’ right. From Chris Löwe's flag-kick Jonathan Hogg won a free header, but nodded the ball into the ground and to Blues keeper Bartosz Bialkowski.

Town began to make some impact as an attacking force in the 11th minute when Leon Best turned away from his man but his pass into the path of Kevin Bru to his left was cut out.

On 15 Emmanuel won a freekick five yards outside the area following a corner, which Lawrence curled just wide of Terriers’ keeper Danny Ward’s left post.

The game had been a fairly evenly-balanced but tame affair of few chances at both ends, but on 29 the visitors went close to going in front.

After Aaron Mooy’s shot had been blocked, Emmanuel only cleared as far as Kachunga, whose effort cannoned off the post.

The loose ball fell to Nahki Wells on the left of the area from where the Bermudian hit a shot across Bialkowski, who did well to save down to his left.

For Town, Knudsen lashed a 36th minute freekick over after Lawrence laid it to him, Best having been fouled by visitors’ skipper Mark Hudson.

Four minutes later, skipper Luke Chambers headed a corner from the left against Huddersfield defender Chris Shindler. The ball was eventually half-cleared to Knudsen, but his return ball was too far in front of Best, who was more involved than against Brighton on Tuesday, and keeper Ward claimed.

Town’s best chance of the half came in the 42nd minute when Grant Ward ran on to Best’s flick and found himself in the clear. The former Spurs man took a touch but failed to make a clean contact with his shot and the ball flew across goal and well wide.

Just before the break Bru headed a corner from the right towards goal but Terriers keeper Ward was able to claim comfortably.

Referee Chris Kavanagh brought the half to a close soon afterwards with the scoreline not an unfair reflection of the first 45 minutes.

As against the Seagulls on Tuesday, it had been a game with little in it and few chances. The visitors came closest when Kachunga hit the post and then Wells saw his subsequent effort saved, while Ward will feel he should have put the Blues in front from his chance.

Huddersfield switched Dean Whitehead for the more attacking Rajiv Van La Parra ahead of the second half.

Terriers midfielder Hogg picked up the game’s first yellow card in the 50th minute for tripping Lawrence as the on-loan Leicester man broke forward.

On 52 Best forced an error from Schindler after a long ball had been played down the right. The former Newcastle man fed Bru but the Mauritius international shot weakly to Ward. As the Huddersfield keeper looked to clear from his hands Douglas impeded him and was booked.

A minute later, a Terriers cross from the left reached their right-back Tommy Smith, whose shot flew over off Knudsen, then on 55 Bru found some space in the box but looked to pass when he should have shot.

A minute later the midfielder was replaced along with Grant Ward with boos greeting the decision to withdraw the right winger. Freddie Sears, who joined Best up front, and Teddy Bishop took over.

The visitors took the lead in the 58th minute after Chambers and Bialkowski between then needlessly conceded a corner. Mooy whipped over the ball and Schindler got ahead of his man to flick a powerful header past Bialkowski.

Boosted by the goal, the West Yorkshiremen took the game to Town and on 62 Scannell saw a shot blocked by Berra. A minute later, Wells headed into Bialkowski’s arms from a cross from the right.

On 66 Sears hit a shot at goal which Ward claimed, the Blues’ first strike on target of the afternoon, leading to applause and then chants of ‘We’ve had a shot’ from the Sir Bobby Robson Stand.

Five minutes later, Michael Hefele took over from goalscorer Schindler, who had picked up a knock.

The Blues had rarely looked like getting back on terms but on 81 Best reached Knudsen’s cross from the left and the loose ball caused some panic in the Huddersfield defence but wouldn’t fall for a Town player and Ward claimed.

A minute later, Douglas won the ball down the left and found space but the Irishman took too long over his cross and eventually hit it well beyond Sears.

Three minutes from the end of normal time Varney replaced Lawrence, moments before Terriers sub Hefele headed a cross from the right over.

Town desperately looked for an equaliser in seven minutes of injury time, Berra seeing a shot blocked, then Varney curling an effort high and wide.

The visitors saw out the remaining minutes, two corners on the Town left were the two most dangerous moments, to retain their place at the top of the table.

The final whistle was greeted by boos and then chants of ‘What a load of rubbish’ from sections of the Sir Bobby Robson Stand.

As so often in recent weeks Town were in what was another match of few chances at 0-0, but once they were behind they were unable to take the game to the opposition, who played the more composed football throughout, and create opportunities.

Sears’s strike was their only shot on target of the afternoon, while Ward’s first-half opportunity was their best chance of the game.

The result sees Town, with owner Marcus Evans watching from his executive box in the East of England Co-op Stand, drop to 16th in the Championship ahead of the international break.

I have been a Town fan for over 45 years and this is the worst it has been in all that time, by miles.
Don't compare the Duncan era, it was nothing like this because the people running the club cared. They could never have allowed our reputation as a proper football club to drop to this level.

"The club currently languish in 19th position and have managed just three wins from their opening 10 games". BBC website on October 11th 2002 when George Burley was sacked.

Stood by Mick for a long time. Honestly can't do it any more. Feel seriously depressed with this team! At the end of the transfer window i thought hmmm ward webster williams lawrence ok give bishop dozzel and a couple other youngsters a chance this could be really exciting. God i was wrong! Mick should go now. Not in 10/15 games time when we'll be in the bottom 3. Live in leeds so saw the Leeds United Ipswich game and my mates who support Leeds couldn't believe how bad we were. So finally Mick..resign with dignity please.

Anybody else a bit bewildered by how many injuries we seem to pick up too? Last season, the season before and this season? Could it be our playing style to blame?

Waiting for the usual McCarthy drool to come out now. Hopefully the north stand start singing "You're getting sacked in the morning".

The fact that we, or any other club at league level, have a 35 year old donkey plying his trade as a midfield player is beyond comprehension. Stats say that someone playing in his position must cover God knows how many miles over 90 minutes. Wonder what his stats are? I'm not blaming him, I'm blaming who hired him and whose bigging him up

this may sound like a stupid question, but i'd like to hear what McCarthy's hopes, ambition or intentions are for this season , it cant be promotion , He is a total waste of space at ITFC now ,he must jump or be pushed out ,no other option will do .

Blimey in less than 2 hours we have 4 pages of comments. What does that say MM. Yep us fans who support this beloved club are dammed peed off with your arcaic ideas and team selections. For ages we all new chambo wasn't a right back but yet you kept playing him and hey presto a forced injury and josh is now at right back and played very well I thought. But alas once Webster is fit he will have a mystery injury and get dropped.

The subs today was totaly wrong in my view yes bring on freddie and teddy but then take of bru and ward !!!!!!!! Yep and leave scuse or Douglas out there !!!!!! Yep that will win us the game won't it MM. And being 1 down vary need to come on around 75 mins not in mid 80,s and to make it worse he took Tom of ffs just go mick

McCarthy has to go and very soon.
This afternoon I sensed the same type of atmosphere not just with the supporters but with our players too that was reminiscent of when Paul Jewell was in his last days with us.
One difference being that Mr Jewell stood up and was commendable when realising he was getting nowhere he offered his resignation. This in the best interests of the club.
However I fear our current manager is too stubborn and proud to resign which will inevitably see us witness a slow lingering decline to very low depths as I also cannot see our owner doing anything about this dire situation.

I also have to comment on our midfielders Skuse and Douglas, without doubt the most boring and ineffective pair I have ever seen wear the Blue shirt!

Stupid goal to give away Chambers why head it back in the first place!!!
Who's to blame the players or McCarthy they are the ones out on the field.
I know his tactics are wrong, he needs to play 4.4.2 at home 4.5.1 isn't working especially at home.
Got to change either Skuse or Douglas or both we have the attacking players but do they have the quality, I'm not sure. Thought Berra played well to keep Wells quiet.
Talking of wells sign him & Scanell up in January, Very good Championship players!!
If we carry on like this we're be fighting relegation.
Got to sort it out Micky boy!! Also we need to shoooooooot....

Where are the MM knows best brigade tonight ? The "he has made good signings , and wait to see the new brand of football we play "
The " don't blame MM , its because our creative players are not fit "
This team MM picks week in week out are relegation candidates , the squad is capable of playoff but if the likes of Douglas , Skuse and Bru play every minute of most games and Ward , Bishop , Grant get a few minutes here and there and Dozzell cannot even get in the match day squad something is very wrong .
I blame the supporters who have accepted and even backed this rubbish for so long bringing us to this position .No player improves under MM and TC
MM out before it gets worse

Very quiet from the usual Mick supporters who claim that those of us who are anti-Mick are wrong and not 'true blues'.

However........Just to add my contrary two pence worth. We were undeniably the better team and did not deserve to lose that. We weren't all bad. As was the case on Tuesday, the opposition were pretty poor.

I feel for McCarthy. Owner sells the key goalscorer of his reign just before the end of the window. Owner fails to tie up a deal for any of the 2-3 replacements McCarthy wants to bring in. Owner continues to charge too much money per game and does too little to promote the games.

Also, it works both ways, folks. If you are going to stay away from games or if you are going to attend but offer apathetic support and save all your energy for the boos then its not really a proactive support - Simply dragging down the morale of your team.

Now that I have attempted to redress the balance of comments I shall reach for my tin hat.

Huddersfield looked efficient and confident, just like town did 2 years ago. But that seems a long time ago. This performance was dire. A below average performance from an average team with below average confidence. Emmanuel looked comfortable again and if we lost Berra for a few matches we would be in deep trouble. In fact, we are in deep trouble now and where is the next goal coming from? It will be a long winter. I dare not to think what the attendance will against Burton on a Tuesday evening.

While Evans is in charge MM. will never get the sack ???? Purely because he does not like spending Evans money and that is the kind of guy Evans like ????
But I believe that Evans has lost interest in this club and will be happy just to poodle along in the Championship with McCarthy who has got no plan A let alone plan B. How this man can think that Douglas and Skuse are brilliant is beyond us all !!! Emmanuel has outshone them and he has only played 2 games ?? THE only way McCarthy will go is to RESIGN BUT HE WILL NOT DO THAT BECAUSE IT IS A CUSHY LITTLE NUMBER HERE.
Why did most of the stewards line up along from the bench to the Tunnel, did they think that McCarthy was going to get Lynched or something ???? I think Ipswich fans are too nice for that

Just really feel justified in not renewing my season ticket now, this owner has just no ambition he will not sack the dinosaur as he is a yes man and is happy to just stay as he has no ambition either. The writing was on the wall for all to see a couple of seasons ago when we were 2nd in the league and refused to invest in January. He is ignorant stubborn and pig headed and continue to pick his favourites even though they are off form, to many defensive midfield players no one creative one player up front no wonder we cannot score we are set up to not concede, but that do not work. The club needs a real shake up if it means relegation then so be it. The crowds are falling they will soon be below 15,000 you cannot blame them enough is enough lets put this once great club up for sale and start again.

Anyone who didn't renew their season ticket or indeed decide not to pay the inflated match day prices which is frankly ludicrous has my full backing as sometimes in life you have to say enough is enough! They need to reduce the match day £ asap and I understand this will annoy Sth so why not do what they used to and give season tkt holders a free match day program or something... This needs addressing as the empty seats only demoralise even further the feeling around the club.

Well I cannot add anything to what has been said by so many.
But could anyone really say that Huddersfield are so special to be top of the table.
Captain calamity once again made the mistake that led to their goal, but better defending of the corner should have seen us safe.
We have a midfield bereft of talent, would Skuse and Douglas be able to command a place in many other championship teams, I don't think so, and Bru still cannot last ninety minutes.
As much as I want Teddy Bishop in the side, he still doesn't look a championship player to me.
This boring style and terrible tactics are driving fans away.
Our attacking options are very limited, it's very obvious why Best had not got a club before we took him in desperation.
Before the season started I said if things don't improve from the way we finished last term it could be relegation we would be facing. And having lost McGoldrick again and the departure of Murphy it looks even more likely.
Marcus Evens the ball is in your court.
