Town 0-1 Huddersfield - Match Report
Saturday, 1st Oct 2016 17:02

Championship leaders Huddersfield recorded their first win at Portman Road for 20 years as Christopher Schindler’s second-half header saw the Terriers to a 1-0 victory. The Blues, beaten at home for the first time in the league this season and now without a goal in four matches, never looked like getting back into the game after the German centre-half had put the visitors in front from a 58th minute corner.

Boss Mick McCarthy named the same XI which drew 0-0 with Brighton on Tuesday, while Luke Varney returned to the bench with Andre Dozzell the man to drop out of the 18.

Huddersfield were the first side to threaten, Sean Scannell winning an early corner down the Terriers’ right. From Chris Löwe's flag-kick Jonathan Hogg won a free header, but nodded the ball into the ground and to Blues keeper Bartosz Bialkowski.

Town began to make some impact as an attacking force in the 11th minute when Leon Best turned away from his man but his pass into the path of Kevin Bru to his left was cut out.

On 15 Emmanuel won a freekick five yards outside the area following a corner, which Lawrence curled just wide of Terriers’ keeper Danny Ward’s left post.

The game had been a fairly evenly-balanced but tame affair of few chances at both ends, but on 29 the visitors went close to going in front.

After Aaron Mooy’s shot had been blocked, Emmanuel only cleared as far as Kachunga, whose effort cannoned off the post.

The loose ball fell to Nahki Wells on the left of the area from where the Bermudian hit a shot across Bialkowski, who did well to save down to his left.

For Town, Knudsen lashed a 36th minute freekick over after Lawrence laid it to him, Best having been fouled by visitors’ skipper Mark Hudson.

Four minutes later, skipper Luke Chambers headed a corner from the left against Huddersfield defender Chris Shindler. The ball was eventually half-cleared to Knudsen, but his return ball was too far in front of Best, who was more involved than against Brighton on Tuesday, and keeper Ward claimed.

Town’s best chance of the half came in the 42nd minute when Grant Ward ran on to Best’s flick and found himself in the clear. The former Spurs man took a touch but failed to make a clean contact with his shot and the ball flew across goal and well wide.

Just before the break Bru headed a corner from the right towards goal but Terriers keeper Ward was able to claim comfortably.

Referee Chris Kavanagh brought the half to a close soon afterwards with the scoreline not an unfair reflection of the first 45 minutes.

As against the Seagulls on Tuesday, it had been a game with little in it and few chances. The visitors came closest when Kachunga hit the post and then Wells saw his subsequent effort saved, while Ward will feel he should have put the Blues in front from his chance.

Huddersfield switched Dean Whitehead for the more attacking Rajiv Van La Parra ahead of the second half.

Terriers midfielder Hogg picked up the game’s first yellow card in the 50th minute for tripping Lawrence as the on-loan Leicester man broke forward.

On 52 Best forced an error from Schindler after a long ball had been played down the right. The former Newcastle man fed Bru but the Mauritius international shot weakly to Ward. As the Huddersfield keeper looked to clear from his hands Douglas impeded him and was booked.

A minute later, a Terriers cross from the left reached their right-back Tommy Smith, whose shot flew over off Knudsen, then on 55 Bru found some space in the box but looked to pass when he should have shot.

A minute later the midfielder was replaced along with Grant Ward with boos greeting the decision to withdraw the right winger. Freddie Sears, who joined Best up front, and Teddy Bishop took over.

The visitors took the lead in the 58th minute after Chambers and Bialkowski between then needlessly conceded a corner. Mooy whipped over the ball and Schindler got ahead of his man to flick a powerful header past Bialkowski.

Boosted by the goal, the West Yorkshiremen took the game to Town and on 62 Scannell saw a shot blocked by Berra. A minute later, Wells headed into Bialkowski’s arms from a cross from the right.

On 66 Sears hit a shot at goal which Ward claimed, the Blues’ first strike on target of the afternoon, leading to applause and then chants of ‘We’ve had a shot’ from the Sir Bobby Robson Stand.

Five minutes later, Michael Hefele took over from goalscorer Schindler, who had picked up a knock.

The Blues had rarely looked like getting back on terms but on 81 Best reached Knudsen’s cross from the left and the loose ball caused some panic in the Huddersfield defence but wouldn’t fall for a Town player and Ward claimed.

A minute later, Douglas won the ball down the left and found space but the Irishman took too long over his cross and eventually hit it well beyond Sears.

Three minutes from the end of normal time Varney replaced Lawrence, moments before Terriers sub Hefele headed a cross from the right over.

Town desperately looked for an equaliser in seven minutes of injury time, Berra seeing a shot blocked, then Varney curling an effort high and wide.

The visitors saw out the remaining minutes, two corners on the Town left were the two most dangerous moments, to retain their place at the top of the table.

The final whistle was greeted by boos and then chants of ‘What a load of rubbish’ from sections of the Sir Bobby Robson Stand.

As so often in recent weeks Town were in what was another match of few chances at 0-0, but once they were behind they were unable to take the game to the opposition, who played the more composed football throughout, and create opportunities.

Sears’s strike was their only shot on target of the afternoon, while Ward’s first-half opportunity was their best chance of the game.

The result sees Town, with owner Marcus Evans watching from his executive box in the East of England Co-op Stand, drop to 16th in the Championship ahead of the international break.

You who defend Mick cannot keep referencing something he did 4 years ago And Murphy's 27 goals scraped us into the play-offs,Not McCarthy's genius tactics.

Totally fed up with this dirge now,I have zero enthusiasm and it's getting to a point where I don't care if we lose cos it's hopefully another step closer to getting this dinosaur out of our club.

The only thing that really worries me is our owners total lack of understanding as to what our fans want for our club - if Mick goes then I guarantee you our owner will be lookng at his little list of managers who have got teams promoted rather than someone that suits our playing style/bringing youth through and giving them a chance etc etc.

Bring back George Burley.

Credit to Huddersfields owners who decided what type of football they wanted their team to play and seeked out a manager to deliver it.. I wonder if Marcus Evans ever considered what style of football MM would serve up.. Our ship is not sinking.. But it is definitely not fit for the open sea.. It should not be up to the supporters to tell the owners when enough is enough.. They should be smart enough to see it for themselves.

It's easy to be critical after losing, so here goes -
Every game is the same, we are ultra-defensive. There is fear in everything we do - fear of losing, fear of making a mistake, fear of trying something creative that doesn't come off, fear of shooting.
This is the mentality that only one person can take responsibility for and it has to change before we end up in a relegation scrap.
Should MM go? Unless he is going to change his attitude to management and instill confidence in the players then the answer must be yes.

How does he continue to get away with it? He must know something about what some people say went on in Rio

I'm amazed that 19 year old bishop can't play 90 mins but 75 year old slugless can play 3 games in a week, well I say play, more trott around pointing at things really, mm has really lost the plot, he has no idea how to change things when we go behind,he takes bru off every game as if it's a habit yet slugless and excuse are untouchable, time to go mm.
I would like to see dyer and Holland come in with Burnley as general manager all love the club unlike mm won't happen though.

"We must play better to win the crowds back" quote from MM .REALLY.! This was absolutely dire, only ONE shot on target.Chambers is worse than ever, about time he was dropped.Nothing in midfield that can string a pass together. Wrong players taken off,What the Hell Is MM doing,he really has LOST the Plot, and that's putting it VERY mildly.Thank goodness we have a two week break,Nothing to P..a me off then.

For heavens sake get someone in the door who understands the modern game and will get this club playing proper football before it dies!!!!!!!! on your way out Mick take your under performing favourites with you as no other club would give 10p for them, on your bike big man, Skuse, Douglas, oh do I need to go on this is the worst town side since the season after winning the championship in 61/62 when every side had worked us out and our fall from grace was alarming we have had so many great years since then, but sadly the only way is down unless it is sorted a.s.a.p

MM needs to go now, if not then in addition to Parr, Foley and Murphy moving on we may well be looking forward to seeing the departure of Bishop, Sears, Webster and Bialkowski, more especially if we get relegated as our most recent points tally suggests. I would prefer us to stay and compete in the championship but to do that we need a forward looking owner and a man at the helm who can see the talent we have available, play them in their best positions and utilise the undoubted talent we have brought on through the academy. MM is not that manager. So, in summary if ME hasn't got the foresight to replace MM and allows him to stay then the above scenario is distinct probability.

Marcus Evans was there, we complain about the cost of tickets, how would you feel if you spent all the money he has and end up watching the dross. Hopefully he will realise that MM is taking us to the same position we were in when he took over. Why can he not see that the attendance and therefore the revenue is slowly dropping, somebody said on Tuesday that one reason for the low attendance that night was it was usual if there was another home match the following Saturday, we'll bang goes that theory as again we had a very low turnout.

When are the protests going to start at Portman Road to get him out of our club?

Another below par performance from a club in decline under the running of Evans and McCarthy. It took until 65 minutes for our first shot (excluding the free kick in the first half) which is beyond belief. Haven't scored in 3 games and Mick again picks the same side.

Skuse and Douglas together again bringing the normal crap that gives us now attacking threat whatsoever. Ward and Lawrence in the sides being forced by Mick to defend first and attack second!

The only plus today was Emanuel actually looks decent and much better than Chambers ever has at right back. However I'm sure Mick will drop him as soon as Smith or Webster are back.

Another awful crowd figure aswell. We need change at this club and it starts with getting rid of Evans and Mick!

Mick times up, we need a manager who can actually change a game in our favour. Same team, same subs. Same tactics 0 goals 4 games, I know we'll try same thing next week retard

We set up not to lose at home and often play one up front. We play a centre-midfield pairing completely devoid of spark and creativity. We play (until recently) a right-back who isn't a right-back and barely a competent footballer at this level. We have decent players on the bench who barely get a look-in because we play the same formation and line-up every week.

Rigd tactics, boring games, predictable results.

Mick has been dining out on the credit of his salvation year for quite some time. He ran out of credit with me a long time ago but now it seems the penny has dropped with his more loyal supporters.

Time to go.

Writing this in the car on the way home, I feel thoroughly miserable. Very few positives. I may have questioned Micks position on a number of occasions, but always stopped short of saying he should go, but alas Im tonight in little doubt it is time for a change. Whether a new manager could achieve anything on Marcus Evans budget I doubt it, but for now I'd just like to see a goal or at the very least a few shots - setting up to win and not playing Skuse/Douglas would help. Very poor stuff.

Skuse, Douglas and Chambers are the three that should be dropped but for some unknown reason, they are the three that seem untouchable atm!
Seems to me like MM is ripping sh1t out of the fans, as he once said 'the more you call for something, the less chance there is of it happening'
What an arrogant prick!

F*****g S***t again!! This is the worst I've ever seen at Ipswich, where's the excitement gone? Portman Road is an unbelievable stadium when it's full with the fans singing, the fans are amazing!!
But the prices are too high even if we were winning, let alone when I'm watching that!! Things have to change at Portman Road soon!! The only way they'll notice disgruntled fans is with booing and banners etc. Time for a big shake up at PR.
