Town 0-1 Huddersfield - Match Report
Saturday, 1st Oct 2016 17:02

Championship leaders Huddersfield recorded their first win at Portman Road for 20 years as Christopher Schindler’s second-half header saw the Terriers to a 1-0 victory. The Blues, beaten at home for the first time in the league this season and now without a goal in four matches, never looked like getting back into the game after the German centre-half had put the visitors in front from a 58th minute corner.

Boss Mick McCarthy named the same XI which drew 0-0 with Brighton on Tuesday, while Luke Varney returned to the bench with Andre Dozzell the man to drop out of the 18.

Huddersfield were the first side to threaten, Sean Scannell winning an early corner down the Terriers’ right. From Chris Löwe's flag-kick Jonathan Hogg won a free header, but nodded the ball into the ground and to Blues keeper Bartosz Bialkowski.

Town began to make some impact as an attacking force in the 11th minute when Leon Best turned away from his man but his pass into the path of Kevin Bru to his left was cut out.

On 15 Emmanuel won a freekick five yards outside the area following a corner, which Lawrence curled just wide of Terriers’ keeper Danny Ward’s left post.

The game had been a fairly evenly-balanced but tame affair of few chances at both ends, but on 29 the visitors went close to going in front.

After Aaron Mooy’s shot had been blocked, Emmanuel only cleared as far as Kachunga, whose effort cannoned off the post.

The loose ball fell to Nahki Wells on the left of the area from where the Bermudian hit a shot across Bialkowski, who did well to save down to his left.

For Town, Knudsen lashed a 36th minute freekick over after Lawrence laid it to him, Best having been fouled by visitors’ skipper Mark Hudson.

Four minutes later, skipper Luke Chambers headed a corner from the left against Huddersfield defender Chris Shindler. The ball was eventually half-cleared to Knudsen, but his return ball was too far in front of Best, who was more involved than against Brighton on Tuesday, and keeper Ward claimed.

Town’s best chance of the half came in the 42nd minute when Grant Ward ran on to Best’s flick and found himself in the clear. The former Spurs man took a touch but failed to make a clean contact with his shot and the ball flew across goal and well wide.

Just before the break Bru headed a corner from the right towards goal but Terriers keeper Ward was able to claim comfortably.

Referee Chris Kavanagh brought the half to a close soon afterwards with the scoreline not an unfair reflection of the first 45 minutes.

As against the Seagulls on Tuesday, it had been a game with little in it and few chances. The visitors came closest when Kachunga hit the post and then Wells saw his subsequent effort saved, while Ward will feel he should have put the Blues in front from his chance.

Huddersfield switched Dean Whitehead for the more attacking Rajiv Van La Parra ahead of the second half.

Terriers midfielder Hogg picked up the game’s first yellow card in the 50th minute for tripping Lawrence as the on-loan Leicester man broke forward.

On 52 Best forced an error from Schindler after a long ball had been played down the right. The former Newcastle man fed Bru but the Mauritius international shot weakly to Ward. As the Huddersfield keeper looked to clear from his hands Douglas impeded him and was booked.

A minute later, a Terriers cross from the left reached their right-back Tommy Smith, whose shot flew over off Knudsen, then on 55 Bru found some space in the box but looked to pass when he should have shot.

A minute later the midfielder was replaced along with Grant Ward with boos greeting the decision to withdraw the right winger. Freddie Sears, who joined Best up front, and Teddy Bishop took over.

The visitors took the lead in the 58th minute after Chambers and Bialkowski between then needlessly conceded a corner. Mooy whipped over the ball and Schindler got ahead of his man to flick a powerful header past Bialkowski.

Boosted by the goal, the West Yorkshiremen took the game to Town and on 62 Scannell saw a shot blocked by Berra. A minute later, Wells headed into Bialkowski’s arms from a cross from the right.

On 66 Sears hit a shot at goal which Ward claimed, the Blues’ first strike on target of the afternoon, leading to applause and then chants of ‘We’ve had a shot’ from the Sir Bobby Robson Stand.

Five minutes later, Michael Hefele took over from goalscorer Schindler, who had picked up a knock.

The Blues had rarely looked like getting back on terms but on 81 Best reached Knudsen’s cross from the left and the loose ball caused some panic in the Huddersfield defence but wouldn’t fall for a Town player and Ward claimed.

A minute later, Douglas won the ball down the left and found space but the Irishman took too long over his cross and eventually hit it well beyond Sears.

Three minutes from the end of normal time Varney replaced Lawrence, moments before Terriers sub Hefele headed a cross from the right over.

Town desperately looked for an equaliser in seven minutes of injury time, Berra seeing a shot blocked, then Varney curling an effort high and wide.

The visitors saw out the remaining minutes, two corners on the Town left were the two most dangerous moments, to retain their place at the top of the table.

The final whistle was greeted by boos and then chants of ‘What a load of rubbish’ from sections of the Sir Bobby Robson Stand.

As so often in recent weeks Town were in what was another match of few chances at 0-0, but once they were behind they were unable to take the game to the opposition, who played the more composed football throughout, and create opportunities.

Sears’s strike was their only shot on target of the afternoon, while Ward’s first-half opportunity was their best chance of the game.

The result sees Town, with owner Marcus Evans watching from his executive box in the East of England Co-op Stand, drop to 16th in the Championship ahead of the international break.

McCarthy's been scratching his head for over 12 months now, how much longer is this going to go on for? Thanks Mick for the first two seasons, regardless of fans opinions on style, but you've obviously ran out of ideas and are far too stubborn to change for the better, please turn the lights out and shut the door on your way out!

Disappointing to lose today. Thought both teams were pretty well matched and there was nothing between the sides really. Thought Grant Ward should have done better with his chance and we had a bit of luck with their shot off the post. Like many I would like to see Teddy get more time on the pitch and Mick is bringing him along, just like Best and As he will with Jonny Williams after the break.

Chambers made a mistake giving away a needless corner but who allowed their centre half a free header? Was that Chambers? Apart from that one error I thought the defence were solid again and it looked like we would get something out of the game against the surprise league leaders.

So we have drawn against Noriech, Aston Villa and Brighton. We had good goals disallowed against Wolves and Norwich which would have produced wins. And we have lost 1-0 to the league leaders whilst not looking second best to them. It's hardly a crisis is it?

We are obviously struggling to score goals and make chances but Mick is playing with the cards at his disposal whilst nursing some players back to fitness.

I am disappointed like everybody else but it's a long season and we are not far away from the teams above us.

Boring, Clueless, No fight, no creativity all pointing to the fact , football has moved on since the days McCarthy was successful, getting back the injured players would make no difference, he will destroy them with his negative, hoof ball, neck aching tactics . Make no mistake, he saved us from oblivion 4 years ago, but now he is stubbornly dragging us back. Thanks for what you done, but now is the time for change and for our mysterious owner to show some bloody ambition or sell to somebody that has!

I've tried hard this season to remain positive thinking things might change. However after horrendous traffic on the M25 both to and from the game enough is enough. After 15/20 minutes of the first half I actually thought the tide was turning. We had them pegged back and they certainly didn't look like a top of the league team. Both Lawrence and Ward were beating players for fun and Emmanuel/Knudsen were getting forward. Then their manager with some tactical awareness changes personnel at half time and goes to 4 4 2.We stay the same suddenly on the back foot and playing crab football!!!!!To make matters worse its all change with 5 minutes left 2 of our best players off and instead of playing balls into the area we still play sideways/backwards!!!
If only the players were allowed to express themselves, play on the front foot, press teams and forget the fear of losing. If these were to happen i honestly feel we could have beaten some of the so called top sides this season(Naaarwich,Villa,Brighton, and Huddersfield). Finally how the hell can Leon Best battle away on his own up top especially when he's not even fully match fit?Rant over and time for a coffee!!Two weeks to recharge batteries then onward to Blackburn. In all seriousness as well( I will reserve judgement until Christmas) but I also believe that possibly with the exception of Newcastle we have the potential to gain many points before Fulham at home if MM plays correct personnel and attacks/entertains for 90 minutes.
I personally hope as well that the negative crew in Sir Bobby Robson Lower(by Cobbold)are disenchanted so cease to attend.

The event sadder part about today was we lost to a goal that was TOTALLY preventable. due to Sunday league standard defending by our team Captain to a side that looks, frankly, ORDINARY at best. How the f luck are they top of the division. Of that's the best the Championship has then we really ARE shyte because we piss in the wind in terms of ability to score a few F luckin goal.

Time Mick to go. I've had enough.

ChestnutSe......how do you know that those disallowed "goals" would have produced wins? Were both in the last seconds of time added on? How do you know how the opposition may have reacted had they been allowed?

Spanishblueblood - Actually I haven't seen Essex57 (thank goodness) for some time, not since he said in his first post of the day that he didn't like posting as he hadn't been to the match then proceeded to make a total of twelve posts over the next 3-4 pages which I pointed out, that was now a long time ago so perhaps he saw the truth!

Chestnutse - you say Mick is playing with the cards at his disposal! May I just point out the cards are of his choice!

Those saying that Murphy was sold from under MM haven't a clue. Both Mick and the club will have known for a while before it was announced that Newcastle were interested. Heck, the rumours were flying around the fans for ages beforehand. They should already have been looking and talking to replacements (they should've been looking for another striker anyway - even if Murphy didn't go.) Can't blame that on lack of goals.

What can I add?most of everything people have written is spot on.This USA true sign the tide has turned.Even as before I've had my say but I've always said careful what u wish for in getting rid of MM.I have to say now it's time to wish!! My God it's like bloody ground hog day !its not working MM change tactics for FF sake!.He won't tho !and that's why us fans are turning. Not even a flicker of hope .Take off ward a natural right winger and replace with Bishop a creative central midfield .??!!?why? Leaves it to late when going 442 why??half time was the time to change thing ,Huddersfield top of the league?another team there for the taking if tattics were more positive .Douglas or Skluse can come off the pitch,I've seen them at half time leave so MM why not change one of our defensive pair? Why start with them both?mm said on radio Suffolk after he doesn't set us up to be defensive yet he's says before game he sets us up to match or counter opposition .Thats a negative approach! Why not set up to suit our players ,so the opposition worry about us.Definality at home.MM out I've had enough

Cakeman - sorry, meant to vote up not down. Bloody iPad!
I started supporting Ipswich in 1969 - in all that time I have never felt as disinterested as I do now. Morale sapping football. If Mick goes we MAY get worse before we get better - Div 3 (sorry "League One") is a distinct possibility. It'd be the first time we've been that low in my lifetime but I'm starting to think it's a price worth paying. Certainly can't put up with this for much longer.

Just imagine how s..t they'd be if they weren't being paid a small fortune to perform as they do

Due to work commitments I gave up my S/T three years ago. At first I was worried that I had done the wrong thing as Murphy started banging in the goals and we were set for the top two in Dec 2014. Then it all went wrong!

These days I only attend one home game per month, mainly out of obligation rather than for anything else. Thank god I missed the last two, although the Villa game I did attend was not much better (despite the last 10 mins).

Why should someone like me attend Marcus Evans "World of Entertainment" at Portman Road! Firstly living 130 miles a way its £40 in petrol and £32-50 to sit in the Upper tier of the BR stand, what waste of time and money, its not even turned cold yet! Tuesday nights in 03 C, bet ITFC fans cannot wait!

I went north on Thursday to Teesside to endure Lee Memphis King - Elvis impersonator. At one point this would have been a rather grim prospect, but in fact he was quite good. Its amazing that anything can seem good these days having watched the last 18 months of dross at Portman Road!

Yes McCarthy is an out of touch stubborn dinosauer who continues to play Skuse, Douglas and Bru in midfield (with Hyam and Coke to come in) but the blame for the dreadful state this club is in lies fairly and squarely with the Evans Corporation. If they had even the slightest interest in I T F C then McCarthy would have been out months ago. You can argue all you like about how Charlton, Portsmouth and the like would love to be in our position but if a person, or in our case, a PLC buys a club you would expect them to want to invest to make the club as successful as possible. Not this shower I'm afraid, they treat the club as a tax loss against the balance sheet with any money raised Mings, Murphy etc going straight into the coffers. I have been banging on about this for over 2 years now and it seems the chickens are coming home to roost and more fans are waking up to the fact that nothing will change as long as Evans PLC owns the club. While they are in charge McCarthy has a job for life. One last point, who was in the box today playing the 'Marcus Evans' role? I hear it is a different person every match.
