Town 0-1 Huddersfield - Match Report
Saturday, 1st Oct 2016 17:02

Championship leaders Huddersfield recorded their first win at Portman Road for 20 years as Christopher Schindler’s second-half header saw the Terriers to a 1-0 victory. The Blues, beaten at home for the first time in the league this season and now without a goal in four matches, never looked like getting back into the game after the German centre-half had put the visitors in front from a 58th minute corner.

Boss Mick McCarthy named the same XI which drew 0-0 with Brighton on Tuesday, while Luke Varney returned to the bench with Andre Dozzell the man to drop out of the 18.

Huddersfield were the first side to threaten, Sean Scannell winning an early corner down the Terriers’ right. From Chris Löwe's flag-kick Jonathan Hogg won a free header, but nodded the ball into the ground and to Blues keeper Bartosz Bialkowski.

Town began to make some impact as an attacking force in the 11th minute when Leon Best turned away from his man but his pass into the path of Kevin Bru to his left was cut out.

On 15 Emmanuel won a freekick five yards outside the area following a corner, which Lawrence curled just wide of Terriers’ keeper Danny Ward’s left post.

The game had been a fairly evenly-balanced but tame affair of few chances at both ends, but on 29 the visitors went close to going in front.

After Aaron Mooy’s shot had been blocked, Emmanuel only cleared as far as Kachunga, whose effort cannoned off the post.

The loose ball fell to Nahki Wells on the left of the area from where the Bermudian hit a shot across Bialkowski, who did well to save down to his left.

For Town, Knudsen lashed a 36th minute freekick over after Lawrence laid it to him, Best having been fouled by visitors’ skipper Mark Hudson.

Four minutes later, skipper Luke Chambers headed a corner from the left against Huddersfield defender Chris Shindler. The ball was eventually half-cleared to Knudsen, but his return ball was too far in front of Best, who was more involved than against Brighton on Tuesday, and keeper Ward claimed.

Town’s best chance of the half came in the 42nd minute when Grant Ward ran on to Best’s flick and found himself in the clear. The former Spurs man took a touch but failed to make a clean contact with his shot and the ball flew across goal and well wide.

Just before the break Bru headed a corner from the right towards goal but Terriers keeper Ward was able to claim comfortably.

Referee Chris Kavanagh brought the half to a close soon afterwards with the scoreline not an unfair reflection of the first 45 minutes.

As against the Seagulls on Tuesday, it had been a game with little in it and few chances. The visitors came closest when Kachunga hit the post and then Wells saw his subsequent effort saved, while Ward will feel he should have put the Blues in front from his chance.

Huddersfield switched Dean Whitehead for the more attacking Rajiv Van La Parra ahead of the second half.

Terriers midfielder Hogg picked up the game’s first yellow card in the 50th minute for tripping Lawrence as the on-loan Leicester man broke forward.

On 52 Best forced an error from Schindler after a long ball had been played down the right. The former Newcastle man fed Bru but the Mauritius international shot weakly to Ward. As the Huddersfield keeper looked to clear from his hands Douglas impeded him and was booked.

A minute later, a Terriers cross from the left reached their right-back Tommy Smith, whose shot flew over off Knudsen, then on 55 Bru found some space in the box but looked to pass when he should have shot.

A minute later the midfielder was replaced along with Grant Ward with boos greeting the decision to withdraw the right winger. Freddie Sears, who joined Best up front, and Teddy Bishop took over.

The visitors took the lead in the 58th minute after Chambers and Bialkowski between then needlessly conceded a corner. Mooy whipped over the ball and Schindler got ahead of his man to flick a powerful header past Bialkowski.

Boosted by the goal, the West Yorkshiremen took the game to Town and on 62 Scannell saw a shot blocked by Berra. A minute later, Wells headed into Bialkowski’s arms from a cross from the right.

On 66 Sears hit a shot at goal which Ward claimed, the Blues’ first strike on target of the afternoon, leading to applause and then chants of ‘We’ve had a shot’ from the Sir Bobby Robson Stand.

Five minutes later, Michael Hefele took over from goalscorer Schindler, who had picked up a knock.

The Blues had rarely looked like getting back on terms but on 81 Best reached Knudsen’s cross from the left and the loose ball caused some panic in the Huddersfield defence but wouldn’t fall for a Town player and Ward claimed.

A minute later, Douglas won the ball down the left and found space but the Irishman took too long over his cross and eventually hit it well beyond Sears.

Three minutes from the end of normal time Varney replaced Lawrence, moments before Terriers sub Hefele headed a cross from the right over.

Town desperately looked for an equaliser in seven minutes of injury time, Berra seeing a shot blocked, then Varney curling an effort high and wide.

The visitors saw out the remaining minutes, two corners on the Town left were the two most dangerous moments, to retain their place at the top of the table.

The final whistle was greeted by boos and then chants of ‘What a load of rubbish’ from sections of the Sir Bobby Robson Stand.

As so often in recent weeks Town were in what was another match of few chances at 0-0, but once they were behind they were unable to take the game to the opposition, who played the more composed football throughout, and create opportunities.

Sears’s strike was their only shot on target of the afternoon, while Ward’s first-half opportunity was their best chance of the game.

The result sees Town, with owner Marcus Evans watching from his executive box in the East of England Co-op Stand, drop to 16th in the Championship ahead of the international break.

Town: Bialkowski, Emmanuel, Chambers (c), Berra, Knudsen, Skuse, Douglas, Bru (Sears 57), Ward (Bishop 57), Lawrence (Varney 87), Best. Unused: Gerken, Digby, Grant, Kenlock.

I assume you must be, because if you are genuinely that deluded then you need to get your head checked!

WHEN McCarthy goes don't expect any big name replacement,as a club we are not an attractive option. Sorry to say but unless Evans goes, and who wants to buy a below par Championship club with huge debts anyhow, I can only see more sorrow for fans! It's going to take a multitude of changes, combined with a huge slice of luck to turn the fortunes of this club. A depression has well and truly set in and around Ipswich Town FC .

I only started being a Town supporter towards the end of PJs tenure. He was at the point where it didn't matter who played nor did it make any difference when he made a substitution. At the moment it feels like we are that point again. MM saved us from relegation when he took over and he did a good job. Was Murphy's resurgence a fluke that helped MM cover over his frailties. I remember Murph before that season and he couldn't hit a barn door. I would never have thought he would go on to have such a great season. He may well never have another season like that again. I'm glad he got the chance to go to another club and hope he gets a chance to play in PL. it may be sentimental due to the fact I've been a Celtic supporter for 50 years.

I feel we have a decent side and are not as bad as some make out we just don't seem to be getting it together at the moment. I despair of MMS tactics as he continues to play the same midfield week after week and it doesn't work. There's no creativity there. We have players that can score goals but with a lack of service it's not going to happen. MM has chosen this team and in in his time has brought in his fair share of below par players. Has MMs inadequacies been masked by Murphy's goal scoring season? Week after week he tends to take off the best players on the park and replaces them with the wrong players. He refuses to be swayed by the fan power but so did PJ and unfortunately like he said if you're winning whether it's with style or flair or with hoofball the fans will be there but when you're losing and it's because you know better than the fans that you won't or don't have the tactical nouse to change the game then you lose the fans and no club is a club without the fans.

I read this in a paper this week

Bees fans 'right to get excited'

Brentford manager Dean Smith has told fans to get excited about a promotion challenge after his side moved fourth in the Championship last night, writes Giuseppe Muro.
The Bees beat Reading 4-1 at Griffin Park and expectation levels are growing among supporters.
"Let them get excited," said Smith. "I am excited, but I get excited by watching good football. When you have momentum you rife with it."
Brentford are unbeaten at home this season and host Wigan on Saturday looking to continue their good form before the international break.

Brentford didn't get a win but they didn't lose either. But it's this type of talk I want to hear about ITFC not other teams. Brentford only have less than half our capacity and probably cost less than our season ticket but they're playing good football and have scored ten more goals than us.

Something has to change but will it happen too late???

I see Tony Mowbray did the honorable thing. Any chance MM could replicate?

As I said before the Chevrons are for one of two reasons, where the ball should be or where we are headed under MM.

ME tell us what you want for the club and if you think you are achieving that goal.

The SEVENTEENTH live game I have been to in a row without us scoring a goal. I will repeat that. SeVENTEEN!!! Given each game lasts (approximately) 93 minutes that is 1581 minutes of watching Ipswich not score a goal, and either lose or try to "grind out" our usual 0-0. The only way we are getting out of this league is through relegation.

Anyway, the Mick lovers constantly criticise moaning without constructive comments so here goes. Bialkowski: thought he was good Great save from Wells in the first half, dominated the box but messed up communication a couple of times with Chambers (who was abysmal today). Emmanuel had a reasonable game. Ward did a memorable run.

Other than that truly abysmal football. The singing in the crowd spoke volumes. People are unbelievably fed up of supporting such a boring team. I have never seen such boring football as the football we have played the last 3 years. Unbelievably turgid and boring football. We didn't even try to get the equaliser until the last 10 minutes.

And what is it with us time wasting????? I just don't get it. If we are 3-1 up with 15 minutes to go I understand the whole "time wasting" tactic. But why do we use it when we are at 0-0 or 1-0 down? That I Do not understand.

A few comments on other posts

Bingboast : Allardyce is not the answer.

MicksZzztactics and ArmieM. Good video choice (especially the lyrics) and well said Arnie.

chestnutse: did we go to the same game of football? Bialkowski was very good, yes. But we certainly did not match them. You make it sound like we played expansive, flowing football. Note: we didn't.

This can be elaborated on. Message me independently with a paragraph or thoughts if you want to adjust this but something akin to this is going to the club this week. Lining up the same as Wagner and then making the same changes as Wagner was the last straw of incompetence I can take...

"Dear Mr. McCarthy,

As you've rightly said in previous statements, there comes a time when a man outstays his welcome; that time is now.

We thank you for everything you've done for us over the last five seasons. The club is ever indebt for both yours and Terry's service. Saving us from relegation, taking us to the play-offs and making some very astute sales in the transfer market have been particular commendable highlights. However, it's time for change at this club and we as fans, respectfully ask for your resignation.

Ipswich Town fans have long had a tradition for patience but we now feel that it's time for a new era. Respectfully, on behalf of the support that hold this club dear to their hearts, we ask you to resign for the integrity of you and the staff, the club and the fans.

This club has a proud tradition and we feel principles that have built this tradition are not being upheld. Over the last 18 months, you've held our voice in contempt, which had left us bewildered. We are at a low ebb. The entertainment value is poor, attendances are falling and the fans and terraces are dispirited.

Once again, we thank you for your service but respectfully ask for your resignation. We look forward to your response.

Regards,
A supporter who holds this club dear."

I seldom unsarcastically! pick in detail on any of our players wearing The Shirt, aside from perhaps the occasional commonly-used concise ehhhh ascertainment: "He simply ain't good enough", or words to that effect ..... but tonight I make an exception in "honor" of our awesome Captain Calamity! (since deservingly the exceptional goal-droughty and close-to-ruined (Tears For) Sears at long last is no longer in the starting XI and there as customary is quite a sufficient number ALREADY picking on our mind-boggling and seemingly never-to-be-dropped-nor-substituted ever sooooo dynamic midfield duo of 'WhatsMyExSkuse' & 'Snooze Doggy Douglas' :-) lol)

THEREFORE MY 60 TRILLION PESOS ITFC-QUESTION FOR TODAY IS THIS:
How on Earth can one of our most if not thé most CRUCIAL-error-prone regular player in the year 2016, who in addition to that also just happens to be A) one of our most Hoof-happy players, and a real poorly-aiming one at that! .... and B) whenever he actually tries to pass the ball forward on the ground or at an reasonable controllable altitude (i.e. one not touching the Stratosphere!) altogether is bound to have one of lowest FORWARD passing completion % not only in The Championship but probably within the entire English Football League (EFL)!!!, continue to not merely start and finish every single game but also continue wearing the by all means IMPORTANT Captain's Armband game after game??????????

Hmmmm not so "Elementary my dear Watson" is it? ... so you 'Sherlocks' out there what can he Chambo (thus omitting 'WhatsMyExSkuse' & 'Snooze Doggy Douglas' from possible involvement in said wild conspiracy theory just for the moment!) possibly "have on" our good Dino I wonder??? :-) lol

Where do we go from here? The football we play is as ugly as salad. The team looks lacklustre, our midfield looks about as creative as marmite on toast for dinner and the only reason we are not bottom of the league is due to unbelievable goalkeeping every game by Super-Bart.

Blackburn are billing the next game as a relegation 6 pointer. If that's correct I hope we can get something from the game. God knows how. We should have replaced Murphy and that's really showing in our results.

Approx.1581 minutes without being entertained' by just a single tiny little ITFC goal!!!!!!!!!! SURREAL!!!!!!!!!! You have my deepest sympathy @guentchev .... and unequivocally deserve something akin to "The Soccer Fan's Medal Of Valor" imho. Hands down mate!

PS: Ohhhh maybe @guentchev you also should seriously seriously consider getting you "Karma" checked out .... either at an professional Witch Doctor somewhere south of the Equator or if that fails one of 'em near extinct last-resort Exorcists! :-) .......... Disclaimer: Just puling your wooden leg of course, in case ANYONE humorless here thought otherwise!

If MM read all these posts would he consider resigning? I would like to think so.

An even more important change would be owner - ME has appointed Keane, Jewell and MM and MM has been the most successful, with little or no money. Go figure.

I have been supporting town since 1975 and really can't be bother to book a flight, hotel etc to watch the Town the way we are playing now - I am based in Dublin, I am sure fans elsewhere in Europe feel the same.

Sorry Mick its time to go, but let's hope Evans goes too.

Today was the final straw & I am now officially a Mick Outer. Despite the team team trying to play a prettier style of football things are clearly not working any more & we just cannot create or take chances. Sometimes things just keep going against a team & whatever the manager does to try and change things no longer works & that's where I believe we are now. We were poor today & all Huddersfield had to do was get a goal & it was game over. Defensively we are okay but there is no link between midfield and forwards with Skuse, Bru and Douglas all static & unable to move forward with or without the ball. There is no creativity, pace or width & Best must have felt very frustrated working himself into the ground with no support. Mick continues to play his way & his favourites irrespective of form & ability. I cannot see it improving now until there is a change of management but doubt it will happen just yet. Thanks for what you have done over last 4 years Mick but time to go now

Decreasing crowds

Little or no hope for the immediate future

Insufficient players

A manager who can't comprehend the importance of victory

An owner who would appear apthetic regards the best interests of the club

Can't score goals

Can't keep the ball at field level

Evident unrest among supporters worldwide

No real opportunity of ever getting back to the top league after an absence of fourteen years

.........................................

McCarthy and Evans - I implore you - either one (or better still, BOTH of you) please vacate your respective positions for the good and future prosperity of this football club.

What I find really interesting is the divided opinion on TwTD. I am involved on all levels of this site (home, forum, blogs, polls etc). By reading the home section, you'd think every fan wants Mick out. However in the forum section (which generally has a whole load of different posters) they seem reasonably happy with the standard of football and mostly seem to want Mick in. Home posters post about hoofball. Forum posters talk about the passing play. The polls often have a mix between both intersections and this leads to 50-50 on the issue (mostly, a recent poll suggests otherwise). Certainly, there seems a massive split of support. Forum posters criticise home posters for being far too negative and when the occasional regular home poster posts in the forum they are often berated. Same thing other way. In other words, we do need to acknowledge that our view isn't the only view. Having a look at both sections is very interesting reading.

Sideswan. With £2m of the Murphy money we signed Best, Lawrence and Williams. Whatever any of our thoughts are on investment in the team, Or lack of it, this isn t the problem. The problem is McCarthy. His negative tactics and playing players out of position are strangling the lifeblood out of this club. He's already ruined Sears, and seems to be having the same effect on Ward whose performances have been poor the past few games. He fairly enough says that Best isn t totally match fit yet but expects him to play up front on his own. Wfen he got the ball yesterday he did well enough but he got it so rarely it was an impossible task for him. Give the guy support up there and maybe we'll reap the benefits. When he played with Varney towards end of Villa match they looked great, yet when Reg came on he plays him wide. I guess at the end of the day that the overall football we played, as with the Brighton match, wasn't that bad , but again there was no threat and no end product. And again that's down to McCarthy picking the wrong midfield, with not enough creativity in it. Forcing players to play his way, rather than give them the confidence to go And play their game. U firmly believe the squad of players we have is good enough to get us up, and certainly in the play offs but not with a manager who stifles their ability and is only interested in setting up not to lose. He needs to go AND NOW

We need a new owner more than a new manager. If you act like a Division Two club in terms of player acquisition - low fees, no fees, loans and Bosmans that is where you will end up. The CEO is very quiet - must be embarrassment.

Sorry to say this but compare us now with the budgies - they put their several million pound reserves out and beat Everton. Might be unfair parachute payments but which overall is the better run club - mind you I think Bury Town could show us in thing or two there.

Pjewelisgod, you make some good points, but not everybody wants to or has the time or inclination to use every section of this site. Some use this section to vent their spleen about the state of the club, its their honestly held opinion but then others, you know who they are, hide behind their site names to try to belittle others. I hope you agree that in the end we all want the team to be successful, it's just we should be allowed to disagree on here without be accused of not being "true fans" or "scummers in disguise" or worse. Others have a holier than thou attitude and seem to think their opinions are the only ones that matter. I got voted down by some for the tongue in cheek comment that those who want MM to stay are probably scummers in disguise as they don't want the best for Ipswich, finishing by saying I did not really believe it. Some will only believe what they want and miss the whole point of a posting.
