McCarthy: Every Team in Our League Would Take West Ham Striker Fletcher
Thursday, 3rd Nov 2016 14:07

Town boss Mick McCarthy believes any club in the Championship would take West Ham striker Ashley Fletcher on loan, TWTD having been first to reveal that the Blues manager and his assistant Terry Connor watched the 21-year-old in action for the Hammers U23s on Monday.

Asked whether Fletcher was the reason for their trip to see the West Ham youngsters beat West Brom 2-1 at Dagenham and Redbridge’s Victoria Road, McCarthy said: “Just to go and watch the game. I haven’t seen West Brom play and it’s a nice, handy game to go and watch.

“But if anybody wasn’t watching Ashley Fletcher to see how he performed, as a kid who had a great season last year with Barnsley and had two Wembley appearances, playing at Dagenham and Redbridge in the U23s, let me tell you, I think every team in our league would take him if they’d let him out.

“But they’ve got some good players, West Ham. And West Brom had one or two as well who were quite interesting. I was asked how we’re preparing for January, we go scouting, that’s what it is.”

In addition to Town, Leeds United have also been linked with England U20 international Fletcher.

McCarthy poured cold water on a report this morning linking the Blues with 25-year-old Dundalk centre-half Andy Boyle.

“Well, it was [Dundalk winger Daryl] Horgan last week!” he said. “I say we’re looking for players and, yes, you’d be looking for a young one to come through if you can get him at the right price.

"But considering we’ve got four [centre-halves] in reality, with Chambo [Luke Chambers] and Adam [Webster] and Tommy [Smith], who is progressing very, very well with his rehab, and Bez [Christophe Berra], it’s not really the slot I’m looking for. Maybe that answers your question.”

Why do we need loan players when we have cash from the sale of DM.
We need perminant players committed to the club,it makes sense.

If Morris or another one of our youngsters were with a PL club I think that MM would be more inclined to play them.

I do want MM to succeed simply because I think that sacking a manager equates to failure but at the moment its hard work. Everything just looks and feels like hard work and there is very little enjoyment going to matches.

But what surprises me the most is that Tommy Smith isn't 'Smithy' and Adam Webster isn't 'Webbo'.

As if watching us wasn't boring enough at the moment he decides to go and watch West Brom reserves.

Good grief.

Permanent signings to help build for the future is the way forward. Half season loan deal for a player unlikely to be here next season is somewhat pointless. The Murphy cash must be spent in full and I'm expecting a fee to be spent.

Enough loans in the building now and appalling favourites continually selected!! this club is giving all the wrong messages to young players that we actually own!!!!???? it's a pity that it looks like Mick is hell bent on taking us into a relegation battle which is no way a situation to put the young guys in so therefore he will continue with the same policy, I hope these guys contracts state they get a pay cut if the worst happens as we will be stuck with the great ones as nobody else will want them

Would they though, as all clubs have budgets? We are told loan players are not cheap, as they want big money when they come from the Premier League. It's dead money though as the player is not ours come the end of the season. Fine if they give us a boost for promotion, but when we are far off that surely it is better to invest the money on signing decent young players for our long term future?!

Chambers is a centre back well that's confusing why does Mick play him at right back?

Isn't Digby a centre half anymore?
Sign this lad up then Mick if he's any good!!
We need something to happen to our forward line,
Because it's pants at the minute.
