Town Back in For Sunderland Striker
Town Back in For Sunderland Striker
Wednesday, 5th Aug 2009 10:56

TWTD understands that Town are set to make a renewed attempt to sign Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy. The Irishman was close to joining the Blues in a joint £5 million deal involving Dean Whitehead earlier in the summer and even got as far as having a medical at Portman Road.

That move collapsed when Hull City came in for the former Waterford United frontman, but talks between Murphy and the Tigers broke down and he is still at the Stadium of Light. Whitehead subsequently moved to Stoke.

The Hull move would have seen the Black Cats receive a fee of £1.5 million for Murphy, building up to £2.5 million with top-ups and it is likely that the Blues had agreed similar terms with the Wearside club.

The 26-year-old, capped nine times by the Republic of Ireland without scoring, spent several spells on trial at Playford Road during 2004/05 before deciding to join Sunderland — who had recently been promoted to the Premier League — at the end of the season for €100,000, shortly after signing a new contract with Waterford to ensure that his hometown side received a fee.

The 6ft 3in tall frontman or left midfielder was a regular in Roy Keane’s Sunderland side.

sign him up, whatever his price & wages. he is a proven goal scorer who will lead the line well & would be a great signing for ipswich.

Why not take him on loan? Maybe he did want to come to us in the first place? Because it involved another player maybe he did not have a say? He did have a medical so his intentions i think would have joined us? wrong advice from another source?

kk he might not be proven i made a mistake there haha. but i think he's a good player & priskin would be good for ipswich but can he really live up to our expectations of scoring 20 goals this season, getting us into the prem this season? i dont think he'll be able to deal with that.

Don't give up on the pursuit of Priskin, yet. Didn't Roy say he was looking to bring in one or two attacking players. Priskin and Murphy would be a hell of a front line.

Would prefer to see Priskin or even Ricky Lambert-may well be worth a punt.
Murphy Isn't good enough really and we could get better value for money elsewhere.

I'm with siralfstrackie on this one. Could be that Keane is looking to land both Priskin and Murphy, which would be nice.

Anyone not think we are playing mind games with Watford, make them think we are after another striker to make them panic sell Priskin to us! Just a thought....

Half the squad is out and the core of the mediocre side from last season is still with us. Nothing radical has changed about the team, both Priskin and Murphy are alright players but not going to win us instant promotion. We should sign both anyway because our squad is so thin and they are alright at this level.

Keane should be aiming for promotion over 5 years, not in one season because after raising all hopes he's already being attacked by the fans. Just imagine what stick he's going to get when we finish 9th.

proven goalscorer haha, he only scored 3 or 4 when sunderland went up. Thats hardly proven. Would rather priskin without out a doubt but even he is not proven at this level.

Most of you lot are quite simply a disgrace. Its such a shame that Ipswich, the club I love, also happens to have the most amount of idiotic whingers in their fanbase out of any other club in the league.

Keane's record so far is 2 wins from 2. He's building up his squad, and has run into trouble because of clubs suggesting ridiculous fees for their players - thats no fault of his own. Everyone on this site agrees we need a striker desperately before Sunday - so Keane allegedly goes back to trying to wrap things up with a striker he knows a lot about, and you lot slate him???

You are a disgrace.

Keane said he was looking to add two strikers. Priskin and Murphy might well be those two. And even if it's not, it's not all black and white here, They may want to too much money for him etc. and that's why we are going back here. We aren't the manager, we don't know really what's going on, only what is reported, so stop bloody moaning. The manager hasn't started the season and the players haven't even got to the club yet and we are already slating them. I'm sure even if we signed Messi, there would be people who still would have a problem with it. Have some patience.
