Town Amongst Clubs Eyeing Derry Youngster

Town, Blackburn Rovers, Coventry City, Celtic and Hearts are all interested in Derry City youngster Darren McCauley, according to reports in Northern Ireland.

McCauley, 17, has already impressed in two trials at Blackburn and Derry manager Stephen Kenny says there is widespread interest in the central midfielder: "We've had enquiries in relation to Darren from a number of other clubs in England and Scotland, so it's great to see full-time professional teams expressing an interest in any of our players."

Kenny says he would understand if McCauley left his club: "Darren has been with us for the past two years, having been involved in our academy side before progressing through from the 'A' team to representing the club's first team in both the FAI Cup and League Cup competitions.

"We've already offered him a professional contract, but he's expressed a desire to play full-time football across the Channel and I can fully understand that."

McCauley is currently playing alongside Town’s Ronan Murray in the Republic of Ireland U19 squad, having previously featured for Northern Ireland’s U18 schools side.

If he moves to any of the interested clubs, both Derry and McCauley’s junior club Top of the Hill Celtic would be due compensation under FIFA rules.

Lol, another McCauley.... (even if his name is spelt slightly differently from the Big G)!

Seriously, sounds a decent prospect if Prem clubs are interested in him too.

We have an Irish central midfielder who is only 21 and needs nurturing who will be a great player ,stick with him rather than bring in another prospect who will be slagged off in a few years for not living up to his potential !!!!

I agree with Surco - I take it your talking about Garvan.
Garvan contrary to what people think has the potential to be a great prem player, he has been linked to several over recent years, why not use money for this dude to go towards a CB or Striker???? I personally think garvan is a quality player and would live to see him in the middle with Leadbitter!

Also now I think the 4-5-1 (or 4-3-3 depending on how you look at it) would work wonders with the midfielders we now have garvan leadbitter and norris with martin and edwards supporting priskin banging team!

The problem with Garven is that he looks like he's running in quicksand. Rarely is he a goal threat and can't really tackle. Can't also really say that he's produced passes to create many goals recently. I can't think of one!!

garvan crossed for bruce to head in against crystal palace the other week.. one of the very few goals we have scored.

Generally though you must get my point. He might be ok alongside a Norris who'll get in the box, but alongside Trotter or Healey he doesn't contribute enough

That is because Trotter and Healy are both very poor and not good enough for this league , true Trotter may improve but he has started most games this season and not been subbed obviously a confidence booster, Garvan has only started once against West Brom probably the best midfield in the division where the whole team was overun. When he came on at Coventry and Palace he looked like one of our best players, try him alongside Leadbitter an Colbaek and and then comment he is not up to it . Yesterday everyone was saying Civelli cannot be rated on only eight games but RK is doing that to all of our young talent Clarke, Haynes ,Rhodes ,Garvan ? So far RKs transfers have not been good lets hope the Sunderland 2 live upto expectations !!

Don't do it Keano. One Maculey is enough however you spell it!

Based on what KBL? Surely one Wright is enough too on that logic?

um, where does it actually say we are officially linked with this player?? 'reported' to be linked i think it actually says, if we had signed half the players we were 'reportedly' linked with we would have had 5 squads and out-spent man city this summer! so lay off keano, stop being negative for the sake of it!!! we WILL continue to be linked with every young irish export, every man utd youngster, every celtic veteran, accept that due to keane's stature in the game, we knew this from the get go, so stop bleeting about it every time a space filler of a story such as this emerges!

Seems to me that we have a good midfield now. One for the future though? Need to improve in defence and up front IMO.
