Roy Keane says he is no nearer to being able to announce the identity of his new assistant manager. The Blues boss revealed that he was looking for a deputy at the end of last season.

Keane says he has spent his time trying to add players to his squad, deals which eventually fell through: “No news on a number two, I’m afraid. I think I’ve been a bit busy trying to get players in to focus on that role, but we’ve got four or five weeks ahead of us before I can focus on that.”

Former Reading and Watford boss Brendan Rodgers, who Keane became friends with while studying for coaching badges, has been strongly linked with the job.

Specialist skills coach Steve Foley left the club in May, while first team coach Tony Loughlin, fitness coach Antonio Gomez and goalkeeper-coach Jim Hollman were putting the players through their paces on the first day of pre-season training yesterday.

Coach Ian McParland will also remain at the club next season but won’t be back until the end of the week having undergone a double hip replacement operation in May. Chris Kiwomya will coach the reserves, having run the U18s last season.

ITFCKeano - are you going to change your profile name when your messiah gets the boot?? How about Barry Chuckle as assistant manager? It may deflect some of the flak away from the "messiah" for a while and he could send Barry to the post-match press conferences to explain away a 4-0 defeat leaving Keano free to demolish the dressing room.........

Who would do a better job then Elvis bearing in mind

Keano's record at getting teams promoted from the Championship is 1 in 2.
Burley 1 in 8
David Jones (Messiah, don't make me laugh) 1in 7
Curbishley took 4 attempts at Charlton

Yallop, I am not advocating anyone to replace Keane. I was pleased when Keane took over but my fawning devotion to him ended last season. Unlike yours. Face facts mate - Keano is clueless. Spend wads and we finished in the bottom half of the championship. Can't sign anybody this season. Our team is actually weaker than it was in May and even Keane is starting to have a bit moan. We can't even get an assistant manager in as Keane is still dithering and only wants yes men.

But pleased you are happy with our muppet manager and our low finish in the table. You obviously will be happy next season too.....

Any chance of answering my question? and is giving a manager one season the way we want to go?

It's also only June. Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Forest, Leicester, Cardiff need I go on have also not signed players yet. The whole transfer merry go round will start soon.

If we're not top six November time then I'll change my tune but I believe in giving people a chance.

Yallop - this forum page is discussing an assistant manager - not a managerial replacement for Keane. Like I said, I am not advocating anyone to replace him but after last year, he is clearly not the man to do it. So, if we had gone down would you have still said he needed more time? If Jim was still here and got us relegated would you have said Jim needed more time?? You pro-Keaners seem to be oblivious and are in love with the name and not what product they offer.

Also, I must say, you are one of the eternal optimists. It's the penultimate day of June and you make it sound like it is June 2nd.

Anyway, it will be all over soon when the fat lady sings and Keano walks........

Isn't the purpose of a deputy to help the manager identify players to bring in? Maybe a good assistant would have contacts that would help things move a bit on the transfer front. It is an important position but it seems this is being left to drift a bit.

wonder if a bit of constructive dismissal might be gouing on at PR right now. All the vibes at the moment are bad, no one is joining the cLub either laying staff or background staff (with the exception of the ex stoke player). As someone else has already stated , Town are concievably weaker at this current time with the two Wrights departing. RK still has no "right hand man" (with experience).

I cant forsee Mr Evans allowing Town to suffer another poor start for too long before showing RK the door - but he appears to be "facilitating" little . I would like RK to succeed, but am fast wondering if he will be gone waaaay before Xmas and perhaps Mogga introduced as his successor !!

Elvis - what's the point in asking me would I be saying give Keane another chance if we'd been relegated. The fact was we didn't. It's like me saying would you always slate him if we'd been promoted.

and for the record I'm no pro Keaner as you so elequantly put it. I'm a pro Ipswicher and the Ipswich way is to give people a chance like we did with Sir Bobby and Sir Alf who like Keane had poor starts at Fortress Portman Rd. We're not a club that gives managers one season and then shows them the door.

One season and people want Keane gone? Rome was not built in a day as the saying goes and Keane needs to be given time. He has clearly stated 2 players wanted to sign for him, yet between ME & SC they could not agree on terms or fees? Keane has also stated last season's start was not good at all and that we must start the new season running!

Come on Town Fans, lets get behind Keane & the boys and give them the vocal support to get the on the winning trail from day one!

COYB - Keano Keano Keano

PS. Well said Yallop

This is a curious one. Any number of reasons could be put forward as to why an assistant hasn't been appointed yet, but I think in this case it is likely to be as RK says - it hasn't been a real priority lately.

The candidates linked with the role earlier this year (Rogers & Boothroyd) were probably a bit unrealistic, in that they would be looking for a full time manager's role, and not that of an assistant. Following that, RK presumably hasn't spent a great deal of time on finding someone, with his time pre-occupied elsewhere.

The problem will be on RK finding someone good enough, who wants the job, and who RK likes/trusts. Given the increasing speculation over RK's future, he may not want to help appoint a ready made replacement. Furthermore, the speculation will likely put off potential candidates. This will be a tricky one, and the way forward may well be to promote from within (McParland).

What exactly has Roy been doing since the season finished 2 months ago?...i'm really curious to know...has he been doing some DIY?,landscaping his new garden?,walking the dog?,throwing beer cans at the telly when Mick McCarthy's been on?..because he sure as hell doesn't seem to have done anything which is going to improve our club from last season's shambles.
