Wickham Has No Intention of Moving On
Wickham Has No Intention of Moving On
Tuesday, 20th Jul 2010 15:16

Town striker Connor Wickham has reiterated his commitment to the Blues, despite renewed speculation regarding interest from Tottenham and Arsenal. Last week, the Gunners were reported to be ready to outbid their north London rivals for the highly-rated 17-year-old.

However, Wickham says he has no intention of moving on: “I’m looking forward to staying with Ipswich and nothing has changed.”

Unconfirmed reports over the weekend claimed Town had put a £10 million price-tag on the England U17 international’s head, while Spurs had previously been reported to have made bids of £5 million and £8 million for the Hereford-born youngster.

Well Said Connor, a firm Fans favourite next season for sure. Bag a couple of goals in the 'Boro game for a 1-2 win and it will be Wickham Mania and the press will have a field day . . . £10m? peanuts.

It's a lovely read but comments like this mean nothing in football I'm afraid. I will be fuming if he goes, I think he'll be a massive player for us; but long-gone are the days when the player himself has any say whatsoever in his transfers.

Make the move now young man. For all the hype about legend in the waiting you'll have the unrealistic expectations of the TWTD turnips on your young shoulders.

Make the move, play with other lads of your own ability & the best coaches in the country.

Secure your future with a mega bucks contract, you can always step down from the Arse & spurs of this world but how many other 'talents' have we seen fade into obscurity at ITfc?

If I was your parents i'd tell you to jump now, ITfc would have no hesitation moving you on if they felt the time was right.

Bigger than Crouch? Not sure, Peter's 6'7, Connor's only 6'3. That would be another 4 inches...

Although Wickham will have a small say in this (he can always reject a hugh weekly wage), I have said on many occasions that ME will make the final decision on whether Ipswich accept a bid.

For those people that think the player has no say.... look at Conago and to a point Lisbie if the player does not want to move he wont a contract is a two way thing the player can be made to honour it as can the CLUB ....Connor Wicham is a blue is a blue he loves Ipswich....

let's hope a Connor can find a good striking partner (more like whether RK can bring in someone experienced and impressive) this season as we really lack fire power up front last season......

I totally agree, someone like Chopra would be just great for Ipswich.
Especially as Ipswich made the mst chances in the whole league, with someone like Chopra upfront who knows how many goals hell get????

Sell this useless clown. Sorry, I mean, yes, come on young fella - lets have some goals early doors... But who will play alongside him? 2nd strikers - we have a few. Of the current players, it has to be Pablo, but RK will no doubt play Priskin - on the grounds he'd paid out big money for him... Unless we sell or off load any current players, I can't see us getting a decent front man. Unless Cardiff get stuffed in the high court on the 11th August...

Wickham saying “I'm looking forward to staying with Ipswich and nothing has changed.” is good news as it just means he isn't imminently about to leave. However, if a Premier League team makes a bid tomorrow and the offer to increase his wage 3 or 4 fold is put to him it could be a very different story.

I want to say Wickham is best staying at Ipswich, but then I look at the FA Youth Cup winning team who didn't make it:

GK Shane Supple - Retired
DF Michael Synnott - Dundalk
DF James Krause - Cambridge City
DF Chris Casement - Free agent
DF Aidan Collins - Chelmsford City
MF Sammy Moore - AFC Wimbledon
MF Cathal Lordan - Cork City Foras Co-op
MF Liam Trotter - Millwall
MF Owen Garvan- About to join Crystal Palace?
MF Liam Craig - St Johnstone
FW Darryl Knights - Newport County

I wonder whether we do have the management and coaching staff to be best for Wickham's development?!

On the plus side, we are giving youth a chance and have several promising young players pushing for first team places so let's hope some can establish themselves.

Glad to hear CW saying the right things, although it may be a different story in times to come. I hope not however, as most fans see CW as the best hope for the future and want to see him stay in a Town shirt.

Re player power and the comparisons with Counago & Lisbie, CW is likely to be offered better terms by any prospective buyers than he is currently on, and maybe more than ITFC will be able to offer in future. Counago & Lisbie however, are not likely to be offered better terms elsewhere than they are currently on at Ipswich, so from their perspective there is arguably little incentive to move on, although now that they are entering the last years of their contracts, they may be more open to securing a longer term contract elsewhere...
