Bruce Confirms Town Enquiry for Sunderland Keeper
Bruce Confirms Town Enquiry for Sunderland Keeper
Friday, 23rd Jul 2010 11:13

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has confirmed that Town have made an enquiry regarding Hungarian international keeper Márton Fülöp. However, Bruce says he doesn’t think the move has as yet gone as far as a formal bid.

On Wednesday, the Blues were reported to have offered £1 million for the 27-year-old, who played for Roy Keane during his spell as boss at the Stadium of Light. Further reports on Thursday claimed the offer to be as high as £1.5 million.

Bruce says Fülöp is very much out of his plans, despite first choice Craig Gordon breaking an arm, and that other clubs aside from Town are interested, West Brom also having been linked: “There has been an enquiry from Ipswich, but I don’t think there has been a bid yet. There has been talk with a number of other clubs as well.

“I’m sure he will go. He wants to play football and I’m not going to stand in his way. With the injury to Craig, it has got me thinking a bit, but Márton wants to play regularly so something will happen there. I don’t know whether it will be Ipswich, we’ll have to wait and see.”

Fülöp is an international colleague and close friend of Town striker Tamás Priskin.

Why ????

Money far better spent elsewhere.

Simple...He's better than Murphy and Lee-Barrett put together!!

Nope, don't see it. Certainly not such a priority position to justify spending a million quid on.

Save it and add it to the coffers for a centre half or goal scorer.

We need a quality keeper to replace Richard Wright - would be a good signing

Richard Wright ?! Don't make me laugh. 10 years ago maybe but certainly not last season !

Sign Fulop up. Exactly what we need.

Its not Top priority agreed but you can't sign all the players you want in the exact order of priority now can we!.... I believe its somewhere we need to strengthen, its a key position and I don't feel BM or LB command the back four like we need,,, Keane obviously agree's hence the interest (as well as loan Begovic signing last season)... Rest assured he will be No1 if we pay £1Mil... Good signing for me

What is everyone talking about, What exactly has Murphy done wrong since arriving here? The Goalkeeper is not an area we need reinforcing, we need strikers and wing backs why arnt we adressing these areas properly?

he is probably a better keeper than brian murphy.

If you are a manager you always have to look for the right deal at the right time. Brian murhpy was a good, cheap signing - and probably on low wages. & did a good job for us last season.

But if a better player becomes available, for a small (ish) fee - sign them up!

Keane is slowly trying to improve the quality of players in the squad. And what harm can having two good goalkeepers battling to be first choice?

Fulop, Murphy & Lee Barrett.

Start from the back Keane and work your way through the team...

We do need a good. solid keeper. Murphy had his moments last year but is the Irish league really a testing enough condition for a Championship side keeper. Hopefully Fülop can get Priskin to flourish.

He looked quality last season.Actually I could think of yet another Sunderland player we should really sign: Darren Bent.Only he wasn't there yet when Keane was.So no chance.Chopra an ex-Sunderland also from his time,Gary Hooper not,so no chance for him either I'm afraid.

Murphy is a solid keeper and also gets a few assists with his massive kicks!
A good keeper with an added attacking weapon if required! Dont forget last season was his first taste of Championship football, he is young and will get better the more he plays. He started to form a great defense with Delaney and MaCauley. Trapatoni has also called up Murphy to his Senior Ireland squads last season. He has a huge future ahead and is tipped to take over from Given in a few years!!
Definately my 1st Choice even if Fullop signs.

With money so tight a million quid on a GK is crazy.

I am sure Márton Fülöp is better than Murphy and I will be glad to see him at PR. But for sure there are other areas we need additions badly. A good striker is a MUST for me. If we don't get one we can be as funny as the last season with the most shots at goal and obviously the most misses...

Would've prefferred to see us go for Kasper Scmeichal.

I agree with most that Brian Murphy doesn't seem strong enough to hold the position as number one. Murphy might be a great shotstopper, but all goalies at this level are these days. I have seen Murphy in action, and if he wants to stay in goal then he needs to be better commanding and coming out of goal.

Kasper Schmeichel, then I'd actually rather go for his fellow countryman Casper Ankergren, who has just been released by Leeds United.

Furlop would be a good addition to ITFC. I believe he's better than Murphy, so go for it!
As far as those saying we need to strengthen elsewhere first as they are more pressing... I only half agree. Yes they are more pressing, BUT, in life you rarely get to do things in the order you want... word on the street is RK is close with 2/3/4 signings, if Furlop is one of them, great! It doesn't mean the others have to be stopped... get in as many of the 2/3/4 as we can in whatever order we can get them in!
I'd be very surprised if he didn't ahve a full back/striker/midfielder on that list and given the recent injury to Delaney, maybe even a Centre half... It doesn't matter what order they arrive in, as long as they arrive.

I still don't get this. RK made a big point of bringing in BM last season ("the next Shay Given," etc). Now he plans to replace him with someone who he very much viewed as a 2nd choice keeper at Sunderland?

Didn't RK also try to sell him to Stoke but he wouldn't go because they wouldn't pay him enough? How can we be offering higher wages than a Premiership side?

If true, this may well be an act of brilliance (I hope it is!) but to me it just looks like a misuse of the available funds. Several good keepers available on free transfers!

Just maybe if we sign him, he can give his close friend Priskin the kick up the arse he needs to start banging in the goals for us.

We pay one million pounds for a goalkeeper in the hope he persuades his friend, the misfit striker, to start performing? Sorry, this theory doesn't work for me...

if anyone saw Fulops cameo at Man City last season when on emergency loan - he looked excellent...... welll worth £1m and we'd get a good few years from him for sure, good age for a keeper...... as for Kasper Schmeichel, i think they want more like £3m for him....... thats too much for a keeper at the moment i think......
