Martin Joins Charlton On Loan
Martin Joins Charlton On Loan
Friday, 6th Aug 2010 20:04

Midfielder Lee Martin has joined League One Charlton Athletic on loan for the season. The Addicks were first linked with a move for the 23-year-old a fortnight ago.

Charlton boss Phil Parkinson says he's delighted to make the signing: "We're really pleased to get Lee in on a year's loan.

"He's a tremendous young player and great acquisition for our squad, He can also play up front or in either wide position.

"What's more, all his family are in Bromley, so he's a local boy.

"It's been another long, protracted deal, but as I've been saying all along, [chairman] Richard [Murray] and I would rather wait for the players we want to fit into the squad and the overall jigsaw we're trying to piece together, and Lee certainly falls into that category.”

Martin moved to Portman Road from Manchester United for a fee reported to be anywhere from £1.6 million to £2 million last summer, signing a four-year deal but has failed to live up to his billing.

Town are likely to be paying a large proportion of the former Wimbledon trainee’s £13,000-a-week wages while the winger is with the south London club.

Martin has been given the number 10 shirt at the Valley and is set to make his debut in a home game against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Hopefully this means we have a new winger on the way. Whittingham?

might do him some good going down the lower league. We are lacking a bit of cover in midfield now which is a concern if players were to get injured or suspended.

Good move. He might regain his confidence.

Good if it gets him back up to the standard I feel sure he is capable of ... and if someting happens to reinforce a depleted squad, which I'm sure it will.

(PS - Can't imagine £12k per week.... per week ! When will Performance Related Pay hit the football industry just as well as it has everywhere else ?)

I am actually very concerned now. Not with Martin leaving - not a great player and possibly the worst of Roy's to date. But if McAuley and Walters go, along with Pablo and Stead - then who on earth is going to play??

Does anyone else worry that actually we have financial worries?

Why oh why could we not have used Martin as a makeweight part in a move for Nicky Bailey a few weeks? Clearly they identified him within that timeframe and we paid £1.7m for Martin last year, so maybe we could even have sold him to them outright as part of the deal.
Once upon a time I used to think we had too many midfielders at the club!

I am hoping that the recent movement of some attacking players and with Walters looking likely to go we might be looking to completely change our attacking options. It just baffles me as to why it all happens on the eve of the season. I am hoping the Scotland deal goes through along with 2 more attacking options. O think the chopra deal will eventually go through and for my money I would take a look at aliadiere on a free. Lets hope something happens soon though !!!!

@Len_Brennan...... And how exactly would Martin join them permanantly, they could never afford his wages.

Jeez, some people really don't understand the fact that wages are the biggest factor of the majority of transfers...... It's not difficult to understand !!!

£1.6m-£2m, plus £12,000 a week for four years. Criminy. What a waste.

Well, maybe we weren't interested in Bailey. Keane has stressed his interest in signing "characters" and Bailey, reasonable enough player though he has been over the years, has a reputation for being a bit of an arse.

How much are Charlton paying of his wages I wonder? £4 or £5K perhaps? If that leaves us with £7K a week, that's a further £364K just for this season and with two more to come. That's about 1,200 season tickets just to pay the wages of a player who is out on loan.

I think it makes sense to get Martin out however we can, but Keane (for choosing him) and Clegg (for allowing such a big contract) are guilty of one of the worst ever signings for Ipswich. Thank goodness these men were not in charge during our administration years, else we would probably have gone bankrupt. For a start, why are we paying 4 goalkeepers?!

All I wait to hear now is that this frees up some wages for Chopra to come in! (we've had that with all 12 or so players who have left Ipswich over the summer, but still no striker signed)

Hey trulyblue, enough of you smart alec guff.

What contract did Bailey have when there? It's not like Chalton have always been a lower league team with players on paltry wages. He had been a top player with them in the Championship the season before. They have players who were on Premiership contracts only a few years back. Getting perhaps £750k along with Martin would also soften the blow of whatever the agreed wages might be and they'd have the potential of bigger clubs coming in for him next season after a good showing (which he is surely capable of) in League One.

@ Len_Brennan

And you don't think that the longer that they are in League one that they wouldn't want to lower their wage bill ???

Surely it's a no brainer...... Just admit it you were wrong and it was a comment on a subject which would never happen for obvious reasons !

Looks quite alot like Stuart Ripley in that pic.
Anyway, not the worst of keane's efforts imo (that honour goes to Priskin, pound for pound).
