Jewell Makes First Town Scouting Trip
Jewell Makes First Town Scouting Trip
Tuesday, 11th Jan 2011 22:38

New Town boss Paul Jewell was spotted on the first scouting mission of his time in charge of the Blues tonight, taking in Peterborough’s 2-1 victory over Brentford at London Road.

The most obvious potential targets in action were Posh duo George Boyd and Craig Mackail-Smith. Left midfielder Boyd has been linked with the Blues on a number of occasions over the years, most recently last summer, while striker Mackail-Smith has scored 16 goals for the League One side this season and looks likely to move back to the Championship before too much longer.

Scotland B international Boyd, 25, spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest last season before signing a new three-year deal at London Road in the summer.

Mackail-Smith, 26, joined Peterborough from Dagenham and Redbridge for £125,000 in 2007 and is contracted to Posh until 2012. Like Boyd, Mackail-Smith was born in England and qualifies to play for Scotland.

Having been unveiled at a press conference on Monday, Jewell formally begins his time in charge at Portman Road on Thursday.

Boyd could be the solution to our left sided problems. Have rated him for a long time. Sign him up PJ

Craig Mackail-Smith is a good player at league 1 level and I believe he did ok last season when posh were in the Champ.
Could be worth a punt.

Peterborough v Brentford, I can't imagine our previous manager going to see that one! This has to be the right thing to do, find the gems from League One, sign them for (relatively) cheap fees, bring them to Portman Road and develop them into top Championship players. This HAS to be better than keep loaning Premier League players who never become our own on big wages and for loan fees. I like the sound of both Boyd and Mackail-Smith. Well done Paul.

keane would have rather watched a sunderland reserve game than a lower league game with better players in it

gotta admit it is nice to be linked with players who are doing well for their teams rather than reserve players, COYB!

Keane would never have even thought about going to a *SHOCK HORROR* League One game.

Paul Jewell not only recognises that there is talent out there in all leagues but I beleive he has the ability to spot specifically WHO would be worth signing.

BIG FAT PAULS BARMY ARMY! COYB!

would be seriously impressed if we signed George Boyd and Mackail Smith, they were both stand out players for posh last season!!! Still I wanna see Civelli in a town shirt again at some point soon, what actually happened with civelli in pre season? was it a set back on his bad knee or was it the other knee?

I am really enthusiastic that in the first day in his job he's out on scouting missions!! He genuinely has been keeping tabs on players and I certainly back him dipping in to the lower league!! Peterborough (and Brentford) are both footballing teams and if we are after the better players from either this can only be a good sign of things to come !!!

This is no way to manage a football team.

Where's the grandstanding press conference where he glares at a journalist? Why no interviews on Sky Sports News? The man's not even THAT famous.
Rubbish.

Get PJ down to Swindon Town; heard a young striker was banging in the goals for them at will. Think his name is Charlie Austin?

If those are the two he's looking at then great, but this seems like the obvious choices. Lets not rule out he could have been looking at an even better prospect!

Like the look of Mackail-Smith, very good prospect. Both Boyd and Mackail-Smith are good ages and would be fairly cheap.

Enjoying the sarcastic comments about Keano!

At last someone who understands the lower leagues. Boyd and Smith good prospects.

Both decent players - v.surprised that both are still with Posh. Boyd - a shrewd 3 yr contract extension by Posh, we should have done the same with McAuley - will get cash for both. Very decent, like Fallon, players that know how to play at our level. Too many times we've wished for Prem type players... we ain't there yet. Both have done well against us in the past. This is the thing PJ will be / is good at. Our squad has too many 'not ready yet' youngsters - great for the future perhaps - but the future is now. COYB.

I remember Keane getting moaned at for signing a League One player in Rory Fallon, now Jewell's getting praise for looking at League One players, because it's something Keane would never have done!

What a difference a few weeks make.

Mackail-Smith would be a good signing, Boyd made such a good impression at Forest last season, they signed Paul Anderson from Liverpool to play there instead.
