Dundee United's Goodwillie Linked
Dundee United's Goodwillie Linked
Sunday, 3rd Apr 2011 10:15

Town have been linked with a summer move for Dundee United striker David Goodwillie. Earlier in the week, Blues boss Paul Jewell confirmed that the club have been keeping an eye on the Tangerines with winger Craig Conway previously claimed to be the subject of his interest.

Goodwillie, 22, was born in Stirling and joined his current club as a 14-year-old, coming through the ranks to make his senior debut in 2005. A half-season loan at Division Two Raith Rovers followed starting in December 2009, during which time the 5ft 9n tall frontman netted six goals in 15 starts and one sub appearance.

For Dundee United, Goodwillie, who has won one full Scotland cap having previously played at U16, U17, U19 and U21 levels, has scored 36 goals in 74 starts and 51 games from the bench.

The striker, who recently signed a one-year extension to his Dundee United contract, tying him to the SPL side until 2013, has scored 16 times this season, including the winner in yesterday's 3-2 win at Rangers.

In January, Goodwillie was charged with raping a woman at a New Year’s house party in West Lothian and is due to appear at Livingston Sheriff Court at a later date.

If comments could avoid speculation on the court case it would be appreciated as doing so could potentially be legally problematic.

I know many people don't like it but the Football Manager series of games are incredibly well scouted by the company who makes them, so well scouted that Everton actually bought the rights to their database to help them scout new players, and every time I start off as Ipswich I buy this guy.

He is young, quick and will consistently get you goals and always develops into a solid premiership middle/bottom half player. This is exactly the kind of signing we need next year to push us up the table to the play-offs!

COYB'S!

CM is fantastic as a database, but that is all it is. To suggest that a player will go on to great things because he does in a simulation is nearly as fact as believing what you read in a horoscope. That said, if we could get him on the cheap then I'm sure he'd be a decent signing.u

Erm, Everton only use the database to alert them to players that they don't previously know exist, because while the people that make Football Manager do a lot of research on their players, the people that evaluate the players aren't known scouts or even people with an established background in football, but average fans.

Scottish players are a waste of time these days. Not good enough even at Championship level. Pace, Power, Athleticism that's how to get out of this league, think QPR.

I'm at a wedding in Dundee and the locals are raving about this lad. He has been described as a big, big player. They say Conway is good but it sounds like Goodwillie is the star.

Finally a recent Town Manager has seen the light and realised that players with weird/unusual/rude names thrive at Ipswich. Trevor Whymark, Colin Viljoen, John Peddlety, I could go on.
We have struggled in the last few years merely because we have a team with common surnames.
Goodwillie will grow at Ipswich and it couldn't come soon enough.

With respect that is only true in some of the very low leagues, they hire professional scouts as well as certain agents to scout players all around the world. They have particularly strong scouting links in South America and Asia although they still struggle to get stats for some African players and thats one area they tend to use fan opinions. Also with Everton you proved my point... they use it for 'players they didnt previously know existed'. That is the whole point of a scouting network!

"Scottish players are a waste of time"? So Charlie Adam wouldn't cut it at our level eh?

Not sure this is the way forward. Dundee would presumably want a decent fee and there have been plenty players that have come down from Scotland and not made the grade (just look at the Middlesbrough squad). Sounds like he has a fair bit of baggage as well...

This lad scores for fun. Most exciting potential signing we've been linked with in the past year. Would be fantastic if we could sign him. Hope there's something in it.
