Town Linked With Blades Striker
Town Linked With Blades Striker

Town are targeting Sheffield United’s striker Ched Evans, according to reports in South Yorkshire. Blues boss Paul Jewell is understood to be a long-time admirer of the 6ft tall frontman, who was previously chased by former manager Roy Keane prior to his £3 million July 2009 move to the recently relegated Blades.

As a schoolboy, Evans, 22, was with Chester City but moved on to Manchester City in 2002 when the Deva Stadium club's youth set-up closed.

The St Asaph-born striker made his senior debut for Manchester City in September 2007 in a Carling Cup tie against Norwich City, who he joined on loan in the following November with his opportunities at Eastlands having been limited to five starts and 15 sub appearances which yielded one goal.

In six months at Carrow Road, the Welshman made 20 starts and eight games from the bench, scoring 10 goals, one of those against the Blues in a 2-1 Town win at Portman Road.

For Wales, he has won 13 caps at full level, scoring two goals, having netted nine in nine for the U21s and one in four for the U19s.

Evans, who has one year remaining on his £15,000-a-week Blades contract, had a difficult first season at Bramall Lane, scoring only four games in 23 starts and 13 matches as a substitute.

Despite Sheffield United’s poor season, Evans has enjoyed a better campaign this time around, scoring nine times in 27 starts and eight sub appearances. Even so, he is likely to be available for a fee significantly lower than the one the Blades paid for him.

Tony Mowbray and Middlesbrough are also believed to be eyeing the situation, while Evans’s previous loan at Norwich has led to speculation that the Canaries might also be interested.

Appeared to have potential but hasn't done much for Sheff Utd. Not a proven striker that you could be confident of 20 goals a season. Worth a punt if cheap but we need more class than this.

Is he related to Marcus ?

Would probably do well alongside a nippy poacher such as Sharp/Maynard. Would not pay more than £750k-£1m though.

I've always rated him, the trouble is, he is just part of an utterly hopeless Sheff Utd team.

Get him in

Would be a good back up / super sub, for 1m.

But we need to sign a player like Sharp or Long or Nugent be for the likes of Evans

I'd sooner it were Billy Sharp.

I really wanted us to get him a couple of years ago, but was glad we didn't after he was such a flop at Sheff Utd. Having written that, we instead signed Priskin and he was even more of a disappointment. Evans is still only 22 and if we can get him on the cheap he may be worth a look. Not the really exciting striker signing we want though.

interesting comments.
Looks like most of you want us to buy anyone who's cheap?
Poor striker in a relegated team. We have and are getting rid of strikers far better than him.

Think he's a half decent player in a poor team, look at Billy sharp he had a poor spell for the blades and is banging them in for donny

Was a hot prospect but it never happened for him at scum of the north but at 22 he can still improve.

Frankly, we need to be realistic. There of teams with as much money as us. to get 2 proven goalscorers is going to be hard. To succeed in this league you need a manager who can turn players with promise into good players. We have to believe Jewel can do this or we won't go up. Simple. If that is the case then Ched Evand would seem a good target, a young player who had a lot of potential, it hasn't gone quite right for him and another manager could easily turn it around for him at a reasonable price. Quite happy with this target, ideally to play with a sharpe etc...

Failed at Sheff Utd, I think most of his goals this season were penalties, and I think you'll find Billy Sharp also failed at Sheff Utd and it didn't mean he was a bad player.
