Jewell Embroiled in Sexism Storm
Jewell Embroiled in Sexism Storm
Thursday, 12th Jan 2012 09:47

Town boss Paul Jewell is at the centre of a sexism storm this morning in the wake of his post-match press conference after the Blues' 2-1 defeat at Birmingham last night. Jewell is trending on Twitter and featuring on morning radio phone-ins.

The widely reported version of what the Town manager said regarding assistant referee Amy Fearn and the penalty the Blues weren't awarded is not an entirely accurate version of events.

As Jewell's press conference began, a reporter asked the Town boss, "I think everyone to a man thought it was a penalty, what's your view?" Jewell responded, "Unfortunately to every man, but not a woman.

“Although the referee didn’t have a very good view, the lineswoman, or whatever she's called, had a great view - it was a stonewall penalty and a sending off. You’ll have to ask her why she didn’t give it. It was a stonewall penalty."

25 defeats in 51 games. That's all I care about.

And it wasn't "stonewall" imo.

Ipswich can't be relegated - he has to be removed with all his coaching staff.
Warnock in with Kiwomya as his assistant.

My money is on a new manger being here by this time next week.

No he isn't, another case of the media having nothing to report but creates a "storm" but reporting that there is one.

He said nothing that he wouldn't say about a male linesman.

Well done for actually reporting the preceding comments Phil, something the press clearly havnt bothered doing as it would put the comment in to context.

It clearly wasn't a sexist comment, but a throw away, witty comment in response 'everyone to a man'

This is the type of thing anyone at work, in a club, or pub may have said and it be reasonably well received, but no, the media being what they are have to try cook up a storm. PC madness, all fun taken out of football. The press, and Modern football really is a tedious bore at times.

If there's going to be a new manager, it has to be now, we're half way through the transfer window! I think Jewell will be staying though although this storm could be the final nail in the coffin depending how the numpties in the FA react!

Have a funny feeling we'll beat Blackpool Saturday though!

Unfortunately the press have clearly made some news where there was none.

Enough is enough. He's had a year & we've now gone backwards, time to go. Not sure Warnock is the answer due to his age? Let's try Curbishley & Holland.

Whilst i think this is just harmless banter and taken out of context, it does give ME an excuse to get rid of him if pure managerial incompetance is not sufficeint grounds.
Defeat at the weekend would surely seal PJ's fate.
Is Warnock the right man? not sure to be honest, I would prefer Ray Wilkins or Gus Poyet

Can't we just use this as grounds to sack him and bring warnock in....?

I was parked at Corley services last night so was listening to the game via the Birmingham commentary and even they said "it was a blatant penalty & they were incredibly lucky to get away with it!"
Jewell was angry and had every right to be because yet again the p**s poor standard of our refs, linesmen/ lineswomen has reared it's ugly head yet all the FA will do is back these morons!!! MALE or FEMALE if you can't do your job properly you should f*** off!!! It's the FA that is wrecking the game by not getting with the times, would have taken 2 seconds for the 4th official to over rule that last night but the FA are too pig headed to admit their referee standard is total cack at the mo!!!

Not Sexist at all in my opinion, whether he stays or goes should not in any way be influenced by this media attempt to hurt him.

You lot stfu yes we lost welldone, but it was Birmingham who are playing well if we were in play offs we would have been worried about strong beat over this. He's only kicked out because he's upset and fustrated I blame the players they need to do it they have to follow there captins actions which seeing leadbitter it means giving up.

If the person concerned was incompetenet, then shouldn't the focus be on her incompetence?

From the above report, the media have twisted the factual position to cook up a storm. The media (and a fair share of people) rely on self indulgent high standards - where were their standards during the phone hacking practices and the refusal of many to accept responsibility?

@pazelle, it was as stonewall as they come, and i yes i was there, and yes i've seen it again....and once again the national media are blowing everything out of proportion, if it wasn't mentioned nobody outside of ipswich would even know about it....clearly lacking any sort of proper story to write about so they're making the most out of nothing (and twisting his words in the process)....the english media infuriates me!

p.s. i really don't think PJ is going anywhere, not saying that's what i want, but i just get the feeling he will be around a while yet

Loaded question from the press and the heat of the moment reply from PJ, who I do feel sorry for. Even though I no longer feel he is the right man and would like to see him turn it around, a change is desperately needed.
Warnock would probably keep us up but not my choice. Burley, Billy Davies, Burley and Osman or even Joe Royle back?

Saffronblue - agree with your views on Poyet - especially with Taricco as assistant. Some seem to think it isn't realistic though - personally I believe Poyet and Taricco are realistic and ideal. Evans got the Bullard deal done and seems well capable of "landing his man".

Zola and Ray Wilkins - ideal as well - but that, however, I would imagine to be unrealistic!

Just a slip of the tongue in the heat of the moment, though what is detrimental about referring to her as a woman or lines-woman for goodness sake? This political correctness has got stupid. PJ obviously upset and even Sky reporter mentioned that the officials bottled it. We played well, pity we lost to two very flukey goals. Move on and let's see what the next game brings. Interesting that we had, for us (!), quite a young team out last night.

I agree with Roytheboy this was in no way sexist it was simply a football fact and the reason he mentioned a lineswomen was merely because she was one. Not a pretty one I might although her decision making was pretty awful it has to be said.

New manager is not the answer. We are leaking goals because the defence is poor.
A new manager in now will have no time to assess the squard and then have time to bring in new players as we seem to take at least a month to sign anyone.

We need to hope Jewell will get some of his targets that he has been looking at for 3 months now and that the Jets Chopras Bowyer and Bullards come good in the second half of the season.

Fell a new manager by the December next year if we are not up there pushin for the play offs, then they can look at the team and buy in Jan 2013. With so many out of contract most of the deadwood will be gone and possible some of our future talent.
