Town and Bristol City are reported to be amongst a number of clubs eyeing Middlesbrough centre-half Stephen McManus. The 29-year-old turned down a loan move to the Blues in the summer of 2009 when a Celtic player.

McManus is currently out of the Middlesbrough first team — his last game was on December 3rd — with ex-Blues loanee Matthew Bates and Rhys Williams ahead of him in the pecking order.

Boro boss Tony Mowbray is keen to add to his squad during January but also expects players to move on: "We need to create some space in the budget to move things around. I have no problem with the people that are not impacting on the first XI moving on.”

Lanark-born McManus came through the youth ranks at Celtic, making his senior debut in the 2003/04 season.

He made 204 starts and three sub appearances for the Bhoys, scoring 20 goals, and captained the side before joining Boro initially on loan in January 2010, signing on permanently the following summer for £1.5 million.

He has made 56 starts and four sub appearances for the Teessiders, scoring twice. With Scotland, 6ft 2in tall McManus has won 26 caps, scoring two goals.

Town are very much in the market for a centre-half with a deal for Leicester’s Sean St Ledger having been put on hold last week.

Surely, at least one of the three 'bids' have to be for a commanding centre back?

Not a great acquisition. His career and abilities are in decline.

Did a job at Champ's League level with Celtic. Get him in

Would be a good signing provided his head is right. Him and St. Ledger should both be fairly competent.

I like old CB's. organising and very commanding, which is vital in a backfour. Bring in him OR st.ledger

I hope he's good, although has spent most of his career at a lower level than the Champ. ie SPL.

Can't go with youth all the time, and 29 isn't a terrible age for a centre half.

Heard he lacks pace but makes up for it with height and positioning.

hmmm......Mogga knows a good centre half when he sees one and this guy doesn't feature in his plans at present...is this an act of desperation?

Some comments on here are hilarious! Sitting in your office thinking your the new Bobby Robson! As for Mcmanus hes a decent centre half but doesnt mean Mogga has to play him as he sees others ahead of him? I think its ideal signing but will agree with some on here that youngsters have to start playing its the Ipswich way we wont get relegated because bottom three are useless!!!

Still only 29? With his experience, exactly the type of centre back we need. Him, caddis, Ritchie and st.ledger and it'll be a good transfer window.

Money for Priskin, leadbitter and a replacement for Ellington and it'll be perfect!!

Although we are in desperate need of new players, especially defenders why is it we seem to always be linked with the same players? Murphy and Chopra are both players who were targeted during Keanes days as manager and the same with McManus. It just says to me that the managers don't have as much input to player signings as we may think, the top brass must have their own aganda for player acquisitions.

Would be a decent signing - but yet another former target.

He will have his work cut out if he joins us! Sounds like just what we are looking for though; plus he could be a right bargain. Will be interesting to see what happens, especially as he turned us down a couple of years ago.

29 isnt old for any position, for goodness sake.

Perhaps we are are still chasing players we were linked with before is because they are good players who will strengthen the club but Keane couldnt get them to sign , another of his failings ,like getting the best out of his signings .At least Jewell has manged to turn around Martin and Scotland ,shame Delaney ,Leadbitter and Priskin seem to be a bridge to far good use of £5 million Roy

Given the way we are letting goals in at the moment I'd almost take Mogga back - hopefully we can get McManus and/or St. Ledger.

clarkey85.. if you think we cant be relegated your utterly deluded, that "useless" bottom three contains 2 teams that have walloped 3 goals past town at home, Forest and Donkey Rovers and Forest also put three past us away. Millwall are below us and they banged 4 in....and incidentally there is and could only ever be, one Bobby Robson. Are you the weirdo over the road at the window with the binoculars?
