Since McCarthy has been here we've signed three types of players:

1) First team players expected to challenge for the team and play regularly;

2) Experienced squad filler, the likes of Varney, Chaplow, Gleeson who are good enough and experienced enough to be able to fill in for a few games on a short-term basis;

3) Youngsters, prospects, and U23 players.

Of the first category, the failures are Wordsworth, Stewart, Malarczyk and Douglas if people want to be harsh as his first season was reasonable.

The record gets progressively worse with the other two groups, the nature of the players signed more variable but the second category stands up quite well over five seasons. The last one, by definition is more speculative but Mings and Moore probably outweigh a lot of the negative by themselves. We've also needed numbers for the U23 squad at times too.

Was Malarczyk signed as a first team player though?

I could be wrong but wasn't it more of a punt?

Ade Akinbiyi couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo...

Maybe, but we weren't overly stocked with defenders at the time so I assume there was an assumption he could play a few games. Regardless, signings in that category have still been pretty good.
