That's not really an equivalence though. The US president can't stop academic institutions publishing whatever research they want on whatever subject they choose. He can bad-mouth it afterwards but that's totally different.

That's two equivalences between the US and China you've made which don't seem very fair. Trump is getting to us all though and is acting like a tool - I am sure everyone can agree on that.

Enjoy the gardening!

You are right about the false equivalences if we view it on a case by case basis, absolutely. But I am not being deliberately contrarian, although I am being too flippant. What I am trying to get across is the cultural difference element that organisations like the WHO and government embassies have to cope with, but which a lot of media can ride roughshod over because most of their readership are from a limited grouping - so that is what they play to. Attempts to evaluate the news that comes our way is inevitably going to reflect the news media we favour, but other than taking a quick scan through Al Jazeera's website - which doesn't seem to have any stories doubting China's statistics at the moment, although it does have one about China upping their funding to the WHO - I am a bit too tired to try and sift through El Pais, Japan Today and any of the other websites I have looked at in the past.
