An alternative view of the current stand-off 04:00 - Dec 4 with 1265 viewsshamboy

For the sake of balance we all like to hear alternative views, don't we? They underpin perspective. So here's mine.

Football clubs' view of football social media: A blight on the face of the Earth, and getting worse. Accuracy rating - 75%.
My assessment: Yes, the worst of it is vile, destructive, ignorant and deplorable. It encourages ill-informed mob mentality. But the best of it (and Phil Ham's TWTD is a good example) deserves some respect as it provides a platform a spectrum of views, although unpopular views can be met with toxicity.

Football clubs' views on the knowledge of fans: One in every hundred knows a little, but they will never know as much as us because we live the reality of it. Accuracy rating - 70%.
My assessment: the evidence is that fans generally have a good impression of the direction of flow, without having to understand the mechanics of it. This was wonderfully illustrated by a caller to BBC Suffolk after the Oxford game who said 'there are so many things I want to say', but in 3 minutes on air said nothing of any consequence.

Football clubs' views of print journalists: As above, but much worse as journalists are getting paid for being ignorant. Accuracy rating - 75%. My assessment: journalists have power without responsibility. Increasingly we see social media influencing journalism and tweets etc being printed. This is worrying as it often authenticates inaccuracy. Opinion pieces are usually bound to antagonise clubs as they are rarely underpinned by knowledge.

Football fans' views of managers whose teams lose more games than they win: generally (with exceptions) this is 'unacceptable' and the manager is hopeless, clueless, inept etc etc. Every game changes the perception of a manager's ability. He can be excellent in the Autumn but hopeless by the Spring. Accuracy rating - 40%.
My assessment - unless you are really close to it, make judgement from a very broad perspective.

My point is this - the first rule of negotiation is 'be in a position to negotiate'. I have difficulty in seeing who will give ground in the current stand-off.

As for Paul Lambert and the club hierarchy, they are but the latest players on the local stage. I am not here to defend or attack any of them. I am more interested in the dynamics of the situation.

I would say that we're past negotiation. PL shouldn't negotiate - he has a 5 year contract. The fans shouldn't negotiate - all we want is some entertainment and some hope. Should we accept no entertainment and no hope? Nope.

It's all down to ME. He must make changes or he will lose customers. It's that simple. The financial structure of the club must change. Whether that comes from ME or from a new owner, but we can't succeed under the strictures that ME's ownership has placed upon the club.

Evolve or die.

The club won't die. But it won't prosper.

What do you think of the style of football being played?

What percentage of games would you expect us to win with the sort of football we have been playing for some considerable time now? How does that compare with the percentage needed to get promoted from this league? Are you happy for us to be stuck in this league for the foreseeable future before the league becomes above our level?

Therein is the answer.

Lambert is vocally very pleased with how we are playing. If he was clearly changing it for the better, I could understand the optimism. However, instead he is vocally very pleased with it.
