I don’t really think it matters what formation he picks or who he picks. He can’t coach, so it’s all a bit irrelevant.

Agreed. We’ve had so many wildly different combinations of players this season even when the 433 sometimes looks like the worst way to fit the players together.

Yesterday we struggled to get a foothold in the game and pressure Portsmouth. Or be hard to break down and frustrate Pompey that way.

Put simply, I think that was inevitable when you play all three of Judge, Lankester and Dobra and they’re milling around between midfield and attack. We also play the above meaning there’s no protection for Dozzell who we want to get on the ball, and little protection for our back 4. We compound all that by playing Jackson on his own through the middle knowing that it isn’t his game and the ball generally won’t stick.

But this seems to be the defining characteristic of Lambert’s teams — a lack of shape. Which is massively ironic when he’s now insisting on a fairly rigid 433 formation.
