Watching the United vs.Villa game 20:27 - Jan 1 with 3259 viewsChrisd

Appreciate both sides are superior to us and have better players, but the way both teams break with purpose, pace and numbers to support their lone strikers and get beyond them is really refreshing to see. Highlights our own deficiencies and something we just aren’t very good at and haven’t been for some time. Just hope PL and his coaching staff are watching.

One of Town's problems is that you can't break with pace if the other team have 10 men behind the ball! A fair number of teams have sat in at Portman Road which means you need to have the patience and quality to break them down. Man Utd and Villa were both trying to bomb forward as soon as they had the ball so neither team ever had 10 men goal side.

And against the teams that have come to attack, such as Portsmouth, Town are so slow at getting the ball forward - sideways / backwards - the opposition have time to get their 10 men behind the ball!

So in essence, what you’re saying is, that against sides that come to sit in and defend, we’re sh1t, and against sides that come to come out and attack, we’re sh1t.

Both United and Villa showed the importance of having pace in the side and having players with the ability and willingness to get forward and support the lone striker, instead of leaving them isolated which we do in the main. Regardless that teams sit deep and invite us on there was a clear blue print at Old Trafford last night, if you are playing that system this is how it needs to be deployed for it to be successful and effective.

Results against the latter suggest that might be the case!
