Reasons to be optimistic (after the season ends) 19:21 - Mar 27 with 2062 viewsITFC_Jenx

It looks very likely we will be doing a 3rd season in L1. However:

1. Cook has a chance to do a total rebuild in the summer. I think there will be enough players that will want to play for him that he can sign. (Lee Evans, Gavin Massey) I think Evans will back him, if not I think Cook would resign rather than let his career stagnate. If Cook quits, then Evans will face a media storm and even more intense calls to quit.

2. Doing a total rebuild in League One is more forgiving than in the Championship. A Championship rebuild smacks of the Hurst season. From what I've read, Cook teams start slowly but when they click they go to another level. Doing that in League 1 is easier and then there is good momentum after the promotion season.

3. Remaining in League One makes us a distressed asset and more likely to be taken over. Hard to read Evans, but if he was holding on to see if we would be promoted and ask for more money, that strongly looks like backfiring.

4. Cook's 4231 will actually bring a footballing identity to our club for the first time in years.

Whatever the case I just want to fast forward to August. Bring on next season!

This seems like a pretty fair point to make.

There will be a lot of good free agents out there, not to mention that contract lengths are likely to be shorter/ salaries reduced at least for several years as clubs recover from the hammering they have taken from the pandemic with hugely reduced revenues. There's no shame in looking at free agents if they do improve us, there will be players out there who will do that/ would be interested in coming here (similar to 2013, when we pretty much built the nucleus of a good team together with 5 or 6 free transfers, at a higher level nonetheless).

It just needs to be sensible recruitment

Just because players are out contract, he doesn't automatically mean they have to be injury prone, Journeyman or even just rubbish. There are some very good potential players coming up available on free transfers. We just need imo to get one in early doors which says ' we mean business' and our position as still a 'big club' will give us the edge on other clubs in the same league. We just need PC to really know what he wants and then sit back and pray it's better than anything else we've had over the past few years.

Exactly. This is where L1 is different in that there are more quality players out of contract who have let their contracts run down to then secure a better deal. Looking on transfer market.com the following are out of contract:

GK- Craig MacGillvray
LB - Connor Ogilvie, Reece James
CM - Tom Naylor, Lee Evans
RW - Gavin Massey, Siriki Dembélé
ST - Charlie Wyke

If we look right, there'll be quality to find.

Surely we've got to be in for Wyke, that's a waghorn type freebie at this level

If he can play as the 1 up top then I'm all for it.

Also forgot Twine at Swindon is out of contract.

I think Gavin Massey is a defo signing, i'd be surprised if he's not, I can imagine a few of the Wigan lads coming over.

Yeah can see that coming. Think there are plenty of players that would happily play under Cook again; seems like that kind of manager.
