This pandemic has revealed just how financially unsustainable football has become. That is largely because players wages have gone through the roof, driven by the money generated by TV deals and the like at the top, meaning clubs lower down the leagues now feel obliged to pay far more to players than they can afford.
I had hope at one point early in the pandemic that this would see players realise their real worth and that things could be brought more under control. But the ESL's answer? Create even more revenue and drive wages up even more. Unbelievable.
