You haven't met my Mum have you?
80...had the virus last June, 2 vaccinations and imagine she will want to live a little on her return, maybe a game of tennis.

Edit....and by the time she gets home will have taken about 1,000,000 tests in 2 and a bit weeks.

I'm sure she will want to live a little. Like the millions of others over the last 15 months who have had to make sacrifices.

I obviously wish no harm on her or for her to get caught or anything but it was always a possibility.

Truly impaired.

This was a possible known outcome for anyone going to Portugal and in fact was likely to happen at some point.

She will have to quarantine like everyone else. It's annoying but was always a huge risk once one has decided to holiday abroad.

What I read....

"I take it this means the vaccination doesn't stop transmission?"

But you already know the research on this is ongoing.

It's not hard to take on board that over time fewer people catch a bad case of something with fewer problems and eventual eradication.

No one in their right mind has suggested vaccination would rid us of covid overnight.

You're back to pushing this thing and it makes no sense why.

Believe me Jeera I am far to busy to take in every twist and turn but I am fairly sure that I was told taking the vaccine was definitely going to reduce, if not end, transmission, not, 'well take it and we'll see!'
When I take my flu vaccine I always assumed that if I didn't have the flu then I wasn't spreading it, is this wrong?
I promise I am not pushing anything.

The vaccine builds up your immune response to it. If you catch it then your immune system responds and attacks it. As a consequence, you are:
1) less likely to develop symptoms
2) if you do develop symptoms then far far less likely you will have a severe case
3) less likely to transmit it because your immune system has weakened it within your body
4) even if you do transmit it, it will have been weakened by your immune response so it's less likely to be caught by someone else (remember transmission technically doesn't mean someone catches it, it just means you are putting it out into the atmosphere)

So when you have the flu vaccine it doesn't stop you catching it or transmitting it - it just renders it pretty ineffective.

The much vaunted 'herd immunity' is based upon the assumption that if 65-70% of the population have had the vaccine then the majority of people who get it will transmit weakened particles of the virus and eventually it will die out.

There are two big issues the government will face once 70%+ of the population has had the vaccine:
1) If they fully open the border then people could pile in from other countries, so although 70%+ of Brits have been vaccinated then this dilutes herd immunity
2) These mutations. The current vaccines are 99% effective at weakening the Wuhan strain, but less so the latest mutations. As the virus keeps mutating, so does the chance that the current vaccine becomes less and less effective.

If you cut out all of the politics and spin and listen to some of the WHO health planners - you will know that there are plenty who are working on assumptions that it will be 4-5 years before this is under control on a global basis - and until that is the case then international travel will be constantly affected.

As for your Mum, a couple of comments:

- My 73 year old Mum was due to fly to Portugal on Sunday. She's a rule follower so has moved the trip to September because she didn't want to isolate. To say she has flipped into a really depressed state would be an understatement - I spoke to her last night and she was just numb.

- Your mum will get visits and she will get calls. When she answers the calls then those who call her will be able to immediately see where her mobile is. If she doesn't answer then I suspect a visit will quickly follow. Expect the authorities to be particularly interested in people returning from Portugal.

People assume the government are watching our every move on our mobiles - I can categorically assure that they are not:
1) The amount of data we generate with our mobiles is way way beyond the capability of any government to monitor
2) It's actually illegal for the authorities to access any of our personal data on our mobiles or on the internet - UNLESS - they apply for a warrant from a judge to do so. In which case they would have to have good grounds and some evidence to suspect you were breaking the law in order to get the warrant. It's a huge frustration for the authorities that they can't because it was really easy to see who was phoning who when we had fixed land lines.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me if we later found out that the authorities have secured a blanket warrant to access location data on mobiles for the period that someone is supposed to be in isolation.

Thanks for an informative and considered reply.
Sorry to hear about your Mum, this trip was my Mum's first trip after I think 4 previous cancellations....she was certainly stressed about jumping through hoops before gong and has now gone into virtual silence mode so no idea if she knows recent developments.
