Hard to criticise the manager when he has been vindicated on tactics 23:20 - Jul 11 with 1961 viewsZXBlue

throughout.

But

1- It was an error not to bring Grealish on at about 65 minutes, when we had started playing entirely in our own half and needed to move the game up the pitch

2- It was trying too hard to be clever, to bring penalty takers on with 30 seconds to go. It takes 15 minutes to burn off the initial adrenalin, and a similar time to get muscles absolutely warm and relaxed. Not to mention the mental side. No one has practiced taking those penalties cold, rather than at the end of a training session, one suspects. Incredibly difficult, especially for very young players who have not been in big penalty shootouts before.

Didn't answer the question, did you?

What on earth do rules have to do with it?

Oh dear. Let's put it down to drink and disappointment.

I said they're the same game. Football is a game. If you're having a kickabout or playing in the Euros final you're playing football. In both of those activities.

Just because the game is more important doesn't mean you can't have an opinion on how it should be managed, especially when you see the same guy make the same mistakes previously.

Stop being patronising and making snide comments and actually engage in sensible debate or take that sharp intelligence of yours and go to bed

Of course you can have an opinion, as do I.

If your opinion doesn't recognise that top level sport has different levels of skill and pressure that totally differentiates it from the "park", my opinion is that you're missing some fundamental points.

I get the disappointment, but feel that England fans need to get behind their successful team to maximise their chances of going that one step further in the future.

Nearly, but not quite. Well set for next time. Well done Italy, we'll learn from you.

Sleep on it.

I think England fans will - luckily we’ve got a very easy game on paper next at home to Andorra which should help - but it hurts tonight. A lot.

The one thing I said going into the final was that I could accept losing if they did themselves proud in the final. Can we honestly say they managed that? First half yes, but second half was a depressing case of men against boys. We flunked it to penalties but the Italians should have been out of sight on our own turf.

Does that give me confidence at the moment that this is the start of something special? Not really. I think the likes of the French, the Germans, the Portuguese and the Belgians (for one more go) will be back and better than this year in 18 months. It feels like this was our moment and we fluffed our lines badly.

So now you're backtracking. You came on this thread saying it was funny how so many people are suddenly experts on managing a final and somehow equating that to a lack of support, as if no supporter is allowed to make constructive criticism in the wake of a defeat (defeat = failure, right? I.e. it's a given that the performance or tactics could have been improved in some way, it's not like we were thrashed).

Now you're allowing me to have a opinion but as long I dont think this match is the same as a kickabout in a park. Don't worry I don't. I said it was the same game, i.e. the same sport.

Managing a final has extra pressure, and Southgate has proved he's generally good at fostering a culture that overcomes this. But he also made glaring mistakes in this game, and I would also argue the one v Denmark, a team we should definitely have beaten in 90 minutes. And as someone else said, against Croatia.

It's apologists like you who hamper progress. And to top it off you patronise others to mask the fact that you are out of your depth. Or you call people stupid. Or drunk.

And you still do it when others call you out.

Apply for the job if/ when it comes up and see how you get on.

I'm not "allowing" you to have an opinion, that's your right as is mine to comment on it. You just seem to struggle with me having one.

Suck it up boyo, it won't hurt so much in a few days. Your team got to the final and narrowly lost. You want to berate them and the manager, but it's all my fault that you can't cope with a narrow loss. Your team will learn and may get over that line in the near future.

Change your nappy.

I honestly think that was the chance. I fully expect the likes of France, Portugal, Belgium and Germany to be firing on better cylinders in 18 months time and some of those sides are young so will continue to grow. A final on home turf and not only did we lose - we were very much outplayed.

Experience of going deep into a tournament counts. This squad have a semi and a final in the bag. Most of those sides won't have that.

What were people saying after the Scotland game?

Only one team can win it. Get behind your team who gave the fans a good run and they'll likely achieve more. Carry on with this over-analytical "I've done this management stuff on the computer and I KNOW" stuff and you propagate failure.

"My opinion", before some desktop expert explains how it's actually my fault you lost, again.

England have no need to, and under Southgate won't, fear any of the sides you mention if they come up against them in the WC.

Winning is difficult. Given this reaction, maybe not playing at "home" maybe better for the players. Have a look at the disgusting stuff those three kids are getting on social media - the FA have already spoken on it - and don't give me the "it's only a minority" crap. They got it from your PM and Home Secretary before the tournament.

This is a thread of people offering their opinions on how we could have performed better. You hijacked this thread by ridiculing said opinions and strongly implying we weren't allowed them because we'd never managed a final before.

It's your right to make a comment on this thread, no matter how snide or pointless. But it's my right to call you out. The fact that you haven't actually offered an opinion other than "well played chaps, better luck next time" shows how out of your depth you are in terms of football knowledge, because anyone watching that game who has a decent level of football-watching experience would have opinions on how this game might have been won (right or wrong). But judging by the fact that you can still only resort to insults when cornered, I'm not surprised. Maybe you're just enjoying being a troll for the night, but please leave us alone :)

Firstly completely agree on the disgusting reaction towards the players and the only smidgen of comfort I’m taking is these braindead morons (including those who caused violence in and around Wembley) are not happy this evening.

It’s not about I’ve managed on a computer etc. and it would help if you weren’t so patronising. I just think that a lot of quality teams will have a reboot over the next 18 months and be sharper once again. That’s not to say we won’t have a chance but it will be more difficult than these Euros were - particularly being able to play six out of the seven matches at home.

The worse thing about tonight was vast difference in quality in the second half - it was worryingly men vs boys and actually made it look like the ‘true’ final was Italy v Spain, which was a much tighter affair. We flunked it to penalties; we shouldn’t have had that opportunity. The other thing is Southgate made the same errors tonight tactically as he did v Croatia three years ago; is he learning from his mistakes? It doesn’t look like it and, despite the general positivity surrounding England in the press, articles and comments are starting to be made about his conservatism.
