Accrington fans on Burgess on 13:44 - Aug 15 by Steve_M | We don't concede many chances, think there was only one other of note yesterday - header from distance midway through second half - but we concede from an awful lot of the chances we allow. Better players & organisation should help there. The latter only comes from playing matches as a unit. |
It's the quality of chances though rather than quantity. Given the players we have you wouldn't expect us to be bossed for long spells in many matches, but we've given away very good chances in both league games so far. Arguably the chances we've conceded from have been better than anything we've created, possibly Bonne's goal aside.

Let’s just take a look at Cook’s history of centre backs. The last 4 ‘left-sided’ centre backs that Paul Cook nurtured were Adam Webster, Matt Clarke, Dan Burn and Chey Dunkley. Webster joined Championship Ipswich from League 2 Portsmouth, and was seen as an excellent signing for us. Burgess could be joining from League 1 Accrington to League 1 Ipswich, yet isn’t good enough? Clarke was a Ndaba type player. In the first team, no appearances. Drops to L2, Cook turns him into the next best thing, up to the Prem he goes. Dan Burn was in L1 with Wigan, was made club captain at left centre back. Guided Wigan to promotion, now playing in the Prem. Chey Dunkley took his spot when he left. Started on the right, moved to the left. Scored 6 goals in the Championship from that position. Should be a tell-tell sign of a good player if a) Cook wants him, knowing his history with left-sided centre backs, and 2) the teams manager is DESPERATE to keep hold of him. How many times have we taken a player not up for sale? Burgess was outstanding last season, second highest rated centre back in L1 behind Ryan Inniss. Give the lad a chance

As has been noted, most fans haven’t seen him play due to the pandemic. He was part of an Accrington side who exceeded most people’s expectations. Cook saw him against us when we struggled to break down a ten man side. Plus as we know, agreeing a fee doesn’t mean we’ll sign him!

Undeniably true! | |
