That's a ballsy move from Ashton, he really must rate him. I am eager to see his first engagement and games with the club. I must admit I am quite apprehensive at this appointment - probably because so little is known of his game management- though who knows, he could be a hero in waiting.

Well we knew quite a lot about Roy Keane.

It won't be a popular opinion, but my honest view is they had very slim pickings of people wanting to come here and from what they had on the table it was better to gamble on an unknown. I believe that Gamechanger were ambitious enough to try Lampard and Terry and were rejected outright, same with Mowbray, so this is a factor as to why McKenna is the manager. The problem we have is the clubs reputation is not good, we're a League One club with a ton of baggage and very little promise, it was always going to be hard to find someone standout at this stage in the season who would be willing to come here.

I also think the way we treated Cook on the surface will have put people off. Cook was a disaster here but he has a very good reputation in the game, most managers will look at a man in their eyes who was given a few months to change everything with a club that was failing before he arrived anyway and think we were wrong and in getting shot of him, or expecting miracles in that kind of timeframe.

From the average supporters perspective we had to get rid of Cook but most were expecting a big name upgrade, there is still excitement about the new ownership and money and the expectation was high. However the morale is back in the toilet again and if McKenna isn't an instant success then Gamechanger are going to take all the flack for bringing in an unexperienced coach.

Indeed. While I am apprehensive, im not against the appointment - I do think some are getting really over-excited though.

Manager contracts mean nothing at all these days.

I suppose if he manages any form of game management, it’ll be an improvement on the last three.

Seriously, yes it’s a bit of an eyebrow raiser, as is the length of contract. It carries a fair degree of risk, but I think it’s better to go this way than a ‘name’ like Lampard (who has no substance as a manager for me), an ancient like Warnock or a steady Eddy journeyman like Harris (I’m being a bit harsh on him - he’d have done ok).

We can only guess at the process undertaken and what happened behind the scenes, who said no and who begged for the job. Did McKenna apply or was he approached? What’s behind such a long contract, what’s been promised? Interesting.

I am apprehensive, curious, interested. It’s better than a Jewell, Lambert style appointment where you knew what’d happen next even though you hoped otherwise.
