I started off in the Churchman's as a 9 year old in April 1969. My first two games were with my dad but after that I went with school friends for the next season or two. I then had a season in the West Stand with my dad, and progressed on to the North Stand for good with other school friends when I was about 13. My early recollections are of the wooden floorboards, rattles and milk crates, although I was quite tall for my age so didn't use one. In those days, there was also no question of getting a lift from my dad. So even as a 9 year old I just got the bus into town, something that I don't think happens these days because of parental fear. As someone said early on in this thread, it didn't matter when you turned up, you could always get to stand alongside your friends.

I've posted before that I was at the front for that game, watching Gary Bailey picking the ball up from the back of his net.

We were all quite taken aback at the time so it's no surprise your friend fainted.

I trust she was ok in the end (and that you got extra points for taking good care of her).

It didn't last...

Am I the only one on here who used to clamber up and hang off the corrugated iron at the back of the stand? Town goals were greated by vigorously back-heeling the iron as hard as you could.

That was in the days of Third Division South. Sounds as if most of you on here need to get some time in!!!

I was there for that game, half way up, in line with the right goalpost as you look at North Stand - my usual spot in those days. What a game. I don’t think I ever saw an Ipswich team play better than that.

Oddly, when it became all seater I had a season ticket 2001 - 2011 in line with the goal the other side. I got moved when NS was rebuilt and never moved back. Poor decision. After that it was middle tier Pioneer which I disliked because of the moaning - but my dad who was getting more frail wanted to sit there so one had to fall in with it.

When I’m able to go again, I will return to North Stand which provided the most fun for me. Other areas of the ground are ok, but behind the goals was always my preference. I know you don’t get as good a view of the game, but that was never quite the point for me.
