Unprecedented impact.

What will remain when the dust settles?

Admit it: it makes a change from a photo of a sign, doesn't it?

It's genuinely interesting, and raises questions about the impact of space junk with the proliferation of privateer launches.

An article on it here:

In an effort to show some interest, did the thing ever hit the Moon?

Did much happen?

Did anyone really care? If so, how much?

Were any Clangers injured in the incident?

It's predicted to hit on 4th March.

The Clangers are on the Earth side of the moon, so should be fine. The impact my cause sufficient shockwaves to spill some soup, so the Soup Dragon may suffer some PTSD.

I was just doing a "Walton Signs" type post, because the astrophysicist is called Bill Gray, and everyone is awaiting the Gray Report.

But his blog post doesn't mention his name, although the Guardian link does.

Buy we have quite a few people interested in astrophysics on here, and it is both interesting in its own right (prediction of trajectories of near-Earth objects) and in terms of the ethics of space junk abandonment and impacts.

Well I have to say that is a more comprehensive reply than I anticipated and indeed, deserved.

Most SpaceX second stages are deorbited and burn up to get rid of the junk problem. This was unusual in that the profile (heading for Lagrange Point 1) made that pretty much impossible.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?
