"Morgan Trowland, 39, a bridge design engineer from London, said: “As a professional civil engineer, each year as I renew my registration, I commit to acting within our code of ethics, which requires me to safeguard human life and welfare and the environment. Our government has enacted suicidal laws to accelerate oil production: killing human life and destroying our environment. I can’t challenge this madness in my desk job, designing bridges, so I’m taking direct action, occupying the QE2 bridge until the government stops all new oil.”

Is it a home made soup..

You can grow tomatoes in it after it has composted.

Now take away the soil if say you are up a bridge.

It is our cause [collective] too right.

And you're right in that the issues surrounding the extraction of natural resources and the implications need to be highlighted on a daily basis, wherever they can.

If it were possible to block places like Downing Street, Westminster, I dunno, spots where the decision-makers themselves could be targeted maybe that would be better served.

Right now, in real terms, there will be people worried sick of losing their jobs, their homes, clothing their children.

It can be argued all day long that with no future none of those things will matter, but it doesn't stop those things mattering today to those people.

It's an easy trap to fall in where we become unsympathetic to people whose lives are in a dreadful state through our own self-righteousness.

A day's pay could be the difference between making a payment this month or going further into debt for some and shouldn't be dismissed.

I do hear you, but just from a human perspective people are already losing their lives right now all around the world as a direct consequence of AGW-driven or enhanced weather events.

Your argument for more 'upwardly' targetted actions only would have held water for me a few years ago, but the recent jumps in local temperature records all around the Northern hemisphere, and the lack of national and international government action suggest to me that we need an attitude change from bottom up as well as from top down, and very, very fast.

We are complacent, and we have been understandably focussing on Covid, Ukraine and cost of living for three years. Perhaps the only way we are going to wake up en masse is when we get hit by something local to us or perhaps when enough people start to kick us out of our complacency for our own good.

It may be that it's a bit of a myth, but we're going to need something like the sort of Blitz spirit that supposedly existed in London in WWII, I think, and a lot of our current concerns and anxieties will necessarily evaporate and seem trivial to us in retrospect.

Of course we're going to need a redistribution of wealth too (and elimination of debts), or civil obedience and law and order will be up the Swanee as quick as you can say "gated community"!
