Häcken 16:03 - Oct 30 with 1013 viewsSharkey

Congratulations to Häcken, Swedish champions for the first time.

The club's name is unusual. It means 'The hedge'. (And also in slang means 'the bum'.) The club was founded in the second world war by some 14-year-olds who wanted to play proper games rather than just have kickabouts. When they went to register their club they were told that the name they had chosen was already in use. So they called themselves 'the hedge' because there was a long hedge running alongside where they played.

They wrapped up the league with a game to spare, winning 4-0 away at IFK Göteborg, which will have been particularly sweet, coming as they do from the western part of Gothenburg.

In other Swedish football updates Ben Morris appeared to be celebrating a promotion for GAIS this weekend too.

Häcken are a class act as a club.

On top of how they compete with far bigger clubs, they also run the Gothia Cup youth football tournament every year – one of the biggest in the world, if not the biggest.

Edit: And here’s the former badge playing on the “arse” meaning. Lovely stuff!
