A false economy? 09:06 - Jan 17 with 3237 viewsDJR

As a civil servant who worked at close quarters with HMRC, I always thought cutting staff, especially compliance staff, was a nonsense.

But the following shows just how important compliance staff are.

It really is a false economy because as the following article states for every £1 that HMRC spends on compliance activities, it recovers £18 in additional tax revenue.

The more life goes on the more I am reminded of a quote which the Permanent Secretary in the small Whitehall office I worked in had framed on his desk. The words were from a letter by a 16th Century by a Swedish statesman to his son, who worried about his ability to hold his own amidst experienced and eminent statesmen.

"Do you not know, my son, with how very little wisdom the world is governed?"

Yep. I can't think of a single Tory policy which has stood up to scrutiny. Indeed, quite a few have been reversed, often not long after announced.

Cameron has as much to blame on this front, but he has managed to avoid any criticism.

His policy of having a referendum on the EU was probably the most damaging of the lot and it will be a long time before that gets reversed.

The referendum was an idiotic idea but also advisory. They could have chosen to find out what leave actually meant and then revisited it. Especially as oily Cameron had slithered off to make his millions.

It’s one thing making a catastrophic mistake, but doubling down on it is about as stupid as you can get and they are going to pay for it at the ballot box while the ‘plebs’ pay for it through their pockets.

This is further evidence of doubling-down on Brexit, and evidence that the lunatics have taken over the asylum.

There is no rational basis for this exercise, particularly given much EU-derived law is concerned with environmental protection. It also takes up precious civil service resources.

The sad thing is that it produces headlines like the following, which are completely removed from reality.

Here is a more rational analysis than that of the Daily Express.

There is no kick start to the economy. Just more blockers, more chaos. Putting it simply, laws, regulations, ‘red tape’ are there for a reason. It’s not about straight cucumbers etc.

For example, if you want to export something on a pallet, the pallet is governed by EU regulations. Quite a lot of them. Red tape? Well the reason pallets are regulated is to try and stop bugs/diseases being transmitted through pallets across borders. Dutch elm disease anyone? If we scrap pallet regs, it means that literally nothing will go in and out of this country unless it’s all on EU pallets, every one of which will have to be checked. U.K. businesses will suffer. No gain there then.

Say you scrap regulations around agriproducts, from animals to seed. Not only do you lay yourself open to substandard dangerous products from abroad, but your EU export trade is finished. End of.

Most finished goods cross borders a number of times, or at least the parts do. If you deregulate unilaterally, you risk losing that business. U.K. companies will either move out or EU companies will source elsewhere. You are literally isolating yourself and making the U.K. poorer. Where is the gain?

If you are going to have a bonfire of red tape, you need to know what the red tape is and what the impact will be if you are not to pay dearly. There are huge volumes of EU laws and regs, many of them written by people from this country. I’ve seen some of them. The only way the government can achieve this is by blindly winging it. Sounds familiar.

It will not boost trade. It will do precisely opposite with the bonus of a possible threat to public health. Never mind, when you shop at Fortnums, you don’t have to worry, I suppose.
