Far from taking back control, they are taking away parliament's sovereign power on 20:11 - Feb 13 by Ryorry | "... not him who has left the Tories, but it is they who have left him". Fair point, my feeling is that many Tory voters would accept that. I think if he were to have talks with LDs here he'd be certain to get selected by them - he's v. popular (even local Labour party members have a grudging respect for him), & the LDs have a strong history in the area in locals. Labour have usually beaten LDs into 3rd in GEs here, but in the unlikely event of Smith choosing to go full red, I think his doing so might cause pitchfork riots! |
The question Smith must ask is 'does he feel lucky, err punk' If he stays with the Tories there is every chance he will lose his seat, as I supect the voters have had enough of the Tories and will do whatever it takes to get them out. He could leave the Tories and become an independent. Unlikely to be elected in the next GE though. Leave the Tories and defect to the Libs. Though they polled behind Lab - I suspect the Lab vote is nearing it's peak, barring lib tactical votes. Whereas the Libs would easily attract Tory voters and if Lab voters switched it would be easily do able as elsewhere (3 recent by elections). I think the Libs might see him as a vote winner and so accept him and select him as a candidate. I'm sure these sort of discussions have already taken place - if ony at the early sounding out stage. elsewhere today "Former CBI president Paul Drechsler says Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is “winning” the economic argument against Rishi Sunak among Britain’s bosses thanks to a “seismic” change in the party’s image." "An industry champion has quit the Conservative party after 40 years and defected to Labour because of the Tories’ “f---business” attitude to Brexit. Iain Anderson is the founder of Cicero, a public relations firm." | | | |
