This here lack of 'some fruit and veg' caused by poor weather in Europe 17:41 - Feb 23 with 1898 views | noggin | When will the rest of Europe be affected? I have to say, I haven't noticed any shortages over here.

This here lack of 'some fruit and veg' caused by poor weather in Europe on 07:46 - Feb 24 by Churchman | As posted on another thread, food shortages have nothing to do with the weather anywhere else. It is down to Brexit. The govt were warned about risks to food supplies years ago, including last year, and have ignored it. They’ve not been interested, not least because they’re in complete denial. The belief that ‘the market’ will solve everything actually has merit providing you are prepared to accept such delights as potential starvation and poverty. Personally, I am not. The shelves abroad are groaning with fruit and veg. The shelves get ever more empty here. That’s proof that there is no problem with supply in Europe so we can put that lame excuse or lie in the bin. Increased transport costs and risk of perishable food rotting in lorries at ports, paperwork, time. Why would you export to the U.K. when you can charge less and earn more selling in Europe? You don’t. No support to farmers here post Brexit and rocketing energy prices means domestic production has fallen and will continue to do so. If stuff is produced, there isn’t anyone to harvest it anyway. So you don’t bother. Why would anyone have planted in a poly tunnel in January for a February crop just to make a loss? They didn’t and rightly so. This is something govt can do something about just as it did in WW2 (Europe starved, Britain didn’t), but our ‘small state’ govt would rather sit on its Fortnums supplied rear ends and suggest turnips and getting another job so you don’t have to be at home or whatever our McDonalds triple pounder and extra fries eating Minister for Sewage came out with. The ever increasing food crisis sits squarely at the tories door. And I happen to know they were warned. Sunak and co: just go. [Post edited 24 Feb 2023 7:51]

The media's willingness to parrot the weather tripe is a little concerning I must say.

It’s pathetic. Did they and the govt not think people might notice that the EU has so much fresh food it doesn’t know what to do with it?

Far be it from me to defend the Tories but as you point out, they are not entirely wrong here. There have been bad harvests in certain areas and a few other countries have also struggled. That said, our problem is made worse because exporting to us is more expensive and has a lot more red tape to deal with than exporting to the rest of the EU and other countries in the customs union part. So we've had a bit of a double whammy. Not all Brexit, but that's definitely not helped. Also doesn't help our farmers lost a load of subsidies from the EU so they don't have that money to help with the energy costs hit.

I heard that the supermarkets' contracted low prices have also put them bottom of the 'who to supply' list ......use your local greengrocer!! Still think that the weather angle is being massively over egged however.

I'm a big fan of greengrocers, we've got an excellent one in Beeston that also does fish. The issue is, it's much more expensive than the supermarkets sadly. I'm in a decent enough position where that is not a problem but for people where every penny counts, it might not be as good an idea. Might be different in Suffolk of course, a lot more farms about than there is here.
