One thing that strikes me is how similar what he describes sounds to populism. If we simply let the ordinary people decide on a range of issues we end up with reactionary knee jerk policy that would be a nightmare.
Am thinking vigilanteism which ends up with mob rule. I saw plenty of the fall out of such systems with summary executions a common occurence with little/no process or justice (in Liberia).
I know Lord of the flies isn't factual but am far from convinced decisions at the bottom don't come with a whole load of dangers. (Whilst accepting the status quo is largely a pile of dog poo)

Shame Callis isnt around to add his thoughts.
I guess that depends on the route from A to B and how much faith you ultlmately have in the vast majority of humans being 'human.'
The Liberian experience I imagine did not evolve from community engagement but more dog eat dog survival of the fittest I would guess. I also think that populism is more about a small minority shouting loudly rather than deeply held conviction. Thanks for adding your thoughts though.
