The time wasting is often to deliberately break up the pattern of play. If a referee is convinced that is what a player is doing then the double whammy will hopefully cut a lot of it out. If football becomes a better spectacle as a result, fans should approve in my opinion.
Additionally, things such as kicking the ball away are often much more than simply time-wasting and are often clear dissent towards the referee who gets so little respect in this sport. Part of the reason for the change is to bring a respect for the officials in an attempt to prevent the haemorrhaging of officials at the lower and youth levels as players copy what they see in the professional game. |  |

All this should have been recognized about 5+ years ago. Pretty obvious stuff.
Everyone moaning that there will be too much time added on, there was 4 minutes today. If players stop time wasting and there aren't too many genuine stoppages, there won't be masses added on. It's not rocket science. |  |
