So Farrell starts for the egg chasing tomorrow 19:38 - Oct 14 with 4289 viewsCoastalblue

Not happy with that if I'm honest, think he's a lucky boy to be getting a start in WC quarter on his CV.

Can England go one better that Wales (I just watched the second half in a pub in Wales, think TWTD when we lose)? You'd hope so, but it won't be easy for this England side.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

These are the nuances you don’t understand as a passive observer.

Our backs are not miles behind other nations in individual quality and class.

The system and structure which the backs are being asked to play within is not the right approach.

Farrell doesn't possess the quality to excel in systems and structures that are markedly more sophisticated than the patterns we currently adopt. I thought he delivered a solid performance against Fiji, who are 10th in the world rankings but may improve to 9th based on this showing. We will be embarrassed by SA at the weekend and would be by any of the top four, such is the chasm that has developed.

I understand my observing to be as active as yours but you're welcome to post your credentials if you believe otherwise.

What did you make of Owens performance yesterday?

I don't credit him entirely with dragging England back from the brink like the writer of this Guardian piece appears to do https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2023/oct/15/blood-sweat-and-effort-how-en

That's not someone in the media sticking the boot into Farrell. I don't see much of that TBH.

It's difficult to know after the event but were any of the kicks he made beyond one of the other options in the squad who might have been taking them? George Ford has demonstrated that he's got an eye for a drop goal when it matters. I'd go as far as to say it's possible that Farrell wouldn't have thought of that late drop goal option without Ford pointing the way in the Argentina game. Would we have been in a position where we even needed to drag it back from parity late in the game with someone else at 10? Hard to say, Ford played 10 when we lost to Fiji in the warm up game.

I fully expect us to get beaten by SA and I wouldn’t be surprised if it is convincing.

That however has nothing to do with Owen, or the quality of our backline, or frontline for that matter.

People also seem to lose sight of the fact we can't magic up an Ntamack or Sexton. Farrell's really so far down England's list of problem areas. He's vastly experience and very rarely lets England down on the big occasions. Perhaps it's inevitable with him being captain but it's a head scratcher as to why people obsess about Farrell's inclusion at fly half and don't seem to ask the bigger questions like whether Daly or May still bring enough to the party, or if Steward should come back in at full back for Smith against SA's high ball (I would say so).

It just seems popular to hate on him. It's a bit of Luke Chambers syndrome.

I like that both Farrell and Ford went to St George's School, Harpenden.
So did Maro Itioje as it happens.

Back in my pre-historic times St George's was the only school team we knew we could beat easily each season. The times, they have changed.

Very few local schools now take rugby seriously. St Albans High School, yes but Haberdashers, which used to be a strong rugby school, was getting 50 point pastings & match cessations regularly so has given up. Becoming more of a minority sport here & this will continue as manty parents don't want their kids to play rugby.

St Albans School. Not at all High. Although I think St Albans High School for Girls exists as such.

I didn't realise the situation at Haberdashers. Had I known that I might have Askes for further information!

I don't hate or dislike Farrell FWIW (he's a good player who represents the country well) and agree that replacing him doesn't come close to closing the gap that's developed between us and the top sides. We have better in his position is the straightforward point many of us make (a divisive point for sure), and I believe the majority of us who feel this are nowhere near booing Farrell's selection in the team. It's a pivotal position in rugby obviously and worth a few points in any match.
