Police will have a legal duty to tell the truth at inquests / inquiries. At present they can lie through their teeth with no legal consequences.
That is why the Hillsborough cover up trial collapsed as it became evident that no laws had been broken. They lied with impunity and got away with it.

One of the Hillsborough family lawyers has just pointed out the proposals are only for the police and not for all public officials.
Which makes me wonder why not? And whether that is the point at which any political consensus collapses (along with the bill)
