Championship sides 17:05 - May 11 with 4260 viewscressi

Last year's top 3 are relegated, Burnley lack of a plan B zero tactics, Sheffield United a muddle from day one sold decent players took to long to bring additions in.
And lastly Luton made a effort but never brought enough quality in and effort only gets you so far can we be better and more successful next season ? .

" We don’t need anybody’s model. We just need to follow our way of doing things that for two years has proved outstanding.... No fear, hit it head on."

Badafackinbing.

I can only assume Androyd is a) clueless b) a rival troll c) indeed an AI bottom or d) all three.

The poster Android reads as somebody who knows of the club and who might even have been around for Robson’s early years but more troll than supporter.

Firstly, the club was promoted with Bill McGarry as manager and Robson only came in when McGarry left for Wolves the following season. The defence for the first few seasons was people like Billy Baxter, Derek Jefferson (Chopper), Geoff Hammond, Mick McNeil, David Best (good keeper), and of course Mick Mills who was a far better player than the poster indicated. He could play either side and also midfield if required. Top player and captain.

The defence was always quite solid and the reason why we survived the early years. We didn’t score a lot of goals. It took some astute signings like Robertson and Clarke to dig us out at the right time on that front.

Allan Hunter didn’t arrive until 1971, some three years after promotion. Beattie emerged 1972/3, Burley a year later. Robson built his first great team over time. It evolved over time, better players gradually replacing already able ones.

I suspect and hope McKenna will follow the same principle.

If the Town don’t get 2 proven Prem CB’s as a bare minimum then we will exceed Sheffield Uniteds s
Abject total of goals conceded. Chaplin Broadhead Leif Davies may prove able to step up to the required level but the pace of the Prem is so much higher than needed in the Championship. Talk of Nketiah is the right idea but without a secure base the Town have no chance next season. Robson got Alan Hunter and was able to develop Kevin Beattie and then Terry Butcher and Russell Osman. Mick Mills was a solid defender and Paul Cooper was an astute addition. I see no one in the current defence coming close to that standard and an inability to keep clean sheets will mean a season of misery. Double promotion is a fantastic achievement but means there hasn’t been a natural development of quality. McKenna will certainly get the best out of what players he has but he basically has a Champioship level squad. Minimum of 6 signings/loans needed. It may be the club take the attitude that we’ve over achieved and accept we are likely to get relegated but build quality slowly with a view to get promoted again in 25/26. WBA did this successfully a while ago and were able to survive for several seasons. The Towns recruitment process will be tested in a way it hasn’t for many years. Brighton and Brentford need to be the models followed but both those had much better defenders than the Town currently have.

In short, established premier league teams have better defenders than us and we need to sign players who are capable of playing for and indeed captaining England in world cups.

Interesting comments by the MOTD pundits, Micha Richards and Shearer, when they are running the eye over the three now relegated (newly promoted teams). Their comments included things like
( yes that old chestnut again), defending / defender qualities ( Sheffield and Luton) and playing style (Burnley), the latter of which also feeds in to ability to defend as a team.

Shearer stated that Burnley didn’t really give themselves a chance this season, because they kept making the same mistakes over and over again. The mistake? Vincent Company’s insistence on trying to play it out from the back , when as he said, the Burnley players simply aren’t good enough to do that at the PL. so why not mix it up a bit and change it , especially if they kept conceding goals from repeatedly giving the ball away coming out of defence. Any alarms bells ring here ?
The quality of defenders for all the relegated teams was also remarked upon.

You would hope wouldn’t you, that the likes of McKenna and Ashton will be fully aware of what needs to be done to try and minimise Town from repeating the mistakes that have gone before by Sheffield, Luton and Burnley. It’ll be about who we can tempt to join us, as from a players perspective, joining a newly promoted club is a big risk. I just hope the quality of our coaching staff and manager will go a long way towards convincing some players to come here. I also think the regular appearances that the youngsters, Omari and Sarmiento have had at Town will tip the vote for any future young players we may be after.

You all know my feelings re our defenders capabilities, but another thing that really does concern me and I hope we try to remedy is our lack of pace throughout thee team. We have a little bit of pace up front, not much, but we have some. After that , I’m struggling to see too many players throughout the team, that has anywhere near the level of pace to deal wit( the pace we will face in the PL. There’s nothing in midfield , so we would be easily over run . We often were caught on the break at Championship level, and even Maidstone made us look like statues, so a fear what even bog standard PL players will do to us. We must, IMHO get pace through the spine of the team. Not an easy task, but what that’s got to be achieved I feel if we are to survive.

COYBS…. We are Premier League 👍

Yes, we’ve been promoted, but thinking ahead to next season’s challenges…. We sit back and dwell on our success ( I’m sure the Club aren’t). We have to prepare. What do you feel we need to do to be ready?
