I might have been thinking of Craig Stadler actually, but I couldn't remember his name and was somewhat distracted by the fact that any search for 'golfer with big tache' seems to come back with an inordinate number of pictures of well-developed young ladies who look like they are about to flop out of a tight bunker and gimme a 3 wood.

I used to love Stadler. He was a great character, if somewhat grumpy. A friend of mine collected a hire care which had just been dropped off by Stadler after an Open had finished & he said he'd never seen such a mess - full of candy wrappers, drink containers & other assorted detritus.

Yep, nicknamed The Walrus, but I’m not sure his singing was up to much and like The Walrus of Love, I’m not sure he missed too many dinners. Great character.
Mind you, he won by far the most important golf tournament of the lot - the US Masters. Something McIlroy will never do.
